Hmm... anime examples, well, Basilisk's final episode was pretty depressing with both main characters committing suicide.

I was never saddened by Jurassic Bark. But I'm not really a dog person. Its not really about a dog. Its about real pure love in its most deep and simple form.

I pass on the entire episode cause it brings me down. What about "Growing Pains" when Carol's boyfriend Sandy (Matthew Perry) gets into a car accident? {Spoiler}You think he's gonna be okay and then he friggin' dies! What the f***?! SitCOM, right? Holy crap, that was wrong.

Hard to watch Yeah, both of these were the first episode I thought of. Though Scrubs has a ton of downer endings, these ones were the saddest, probably because they showed the vulnerability of a man who presumably had none, Dr. Cox. Whenever I hear "How To Save A Life", I can only think of him freaking out over losing the patient.

I have to agree about Jurassic Bark. I still change the channel when its on. Also how about that episode of the Transformers when Optimus Prime comes back as a zombie and almost kills the Autobots before dying again.

24 season one, what a kick in the gut that was. No not a bit. I am sorry to say I was happy her character would not be returning to further make Jack look like a B****

Agreed with Futurama's "Jurassic Bark" and the Dinosaurs finale. There was also an episode of M*A*S*H where all of the members have nightmares (Hot Lips in her wedding dress, covered in blood; Winchester as a stage magician, performing while patients die; Hawkeye without arms, floating in a boat). At the end, all of the cast members go off to get some rest and Winchester says "To sleep... perchance to dream", leading everyone to stay up for another cup of coffee... There's a few M*A*S*H episodes that end on a down note, but that's the first I thought of. "Abyssinia, Henry" was a really hard one to swallow. If you want recent, this week's Criminal Minds is a real downer (especially for a family holiday week). I imagine we won't see much more of Hotch. Yeah it was. I watched that episode and I was like "Wow ... did I just experience what I did?" If there is one thing CBS does well, it's crime dramas. And as far as the MASH episode went, I remember watching that one as a kid and I didn't know what to say afterwards. MASH had some dramatic moments, but overall it was usually a comedy. That episode was pretty much depressing from beginning to end. And the series finale had some fairly depressing moments as well. The Futurama episode with Fry's dog is the one that always comes to mind when I see a topic like this. It actually surprised me because I figured a story like that would have a happy ending of some sort. One that doesn't seem to get mentioned much is the classic Star Trek episode "The City on the Edge of Forever." For a character who only appears in one episode, Edith Keeler's death always saddens me for some reason. I think Shatner's performance is what sells it. The way he delivers the final line of the episode gives you the impression that Kirk will never quite be the same. You damn right. Star Trek gets a lot of heat for being a silly show in space, but they had some great writing. They dealt with a lot of issues in a lot of the shows, and if I'm not mistaken they had the first interracial kiss in prime time. But yeah, when I saw that episode as a kid, it was like the fourth or fifth episode I had seen, and I was hooked from there on out. {Spoiler} I shouldn't ask this here, but since I'm going on about Star Trek, any other fans of the old series or just movie geeks like myself who had a mini nerdgasm when they saw The Enterprise at the space dock in the new movie this past summer? I had the same reaction that Kirk did.

Final episode of WCW Nitro, of course. Series Finale of Quantum Leap{Spoiler}We're told Sam never was able to "leap" home, because the writers are a bunch of assholes. A few episodes of Forever Knight had REAL downer endings but the series finale was the biggest downer of all: {Spoiler}Tracy Vetter is shot and killed, Nick kills Natalie by draining too much of her blood and we're led to believe Lacroix staked Nick at the end, though it's not shown. And there was an episode of the Clueless tv show where Cher's boyfriend dies from internal injuries he got from getting into a drunk driving accident. For a teen UPN show, that was pretty heavy. Wow wow wow wow wow wow... hold the phone here... YOU watched Clueless? I was never saddened by Jurassic Bark. But I'm not really a dog person. I always thought Luck Of The Fryish was sadder.

Coach: The episode where a player who was on his college team made it big in the pros and after being honored he revealed he was dying of cancer (or something) caused by steroid abuse. Coach was blaming himself because the player started on steroids when he was playing college ball for him. When Christine told him not to blame himself because he didn't know the player was taking steroids, Coach replied "That's just it Christine....I did know." And the episode ended. Depressing, powerful, and a great example of making the title character of a show less than perfect yet still likable.

I liked that show, except that in every bowl game sequence for years, they always showed footage of the Minnesota Gophers vs. The Wisconsin Badgers, usually showing The Badgers on the losing end, even though they won some of those games.

The Shield was a pretty big downer. Ronnie goes to jail, Shane kills his wife and son, and Vic is alone and forced to do a job he hates. That was an amazing finale. Very powerful and the best series finale I've seen in a very long time. The episode on Futurama with Fry's dog. That one really bothered me. The last episode of Seinfeld, because such a great show went out in a really crappy way (but at least it was better than the original idea which was to have them all die). Edit: The last episode of MASH. It wasn't terrible, but it was very bittersweet (for me at least). I loved the show and when it ended I was really bummed out.

Mortal Kombat: Conquest {Spoiler}Everybody dies, and I mean, everybody. And the killer seems to be Black Scorpion, too. Shao Khan conquers the Earth, and has Raiden as his slave, and the earth is left a ruined and lifeless planet. Seriously, this was the last episode. And it's all Raiden's damn fault. Because instead of pulling a Marduk on Khan, he spares him. Seriously, because Thunder Gods are known for showing mercy and all. So Khan is able to merge the worlds, and Raiden loses his powers, for some reason that never made sense. Granted, it was a cliffhanger, and the next show would have had the Elder Gods passing judgement on Khan for breaking the rules and restoring the universe.

The episode of Fresh Prince where Will's father leaves him again and Uncle Phil embracing him at the end gets me. Thats my pick. That and of course Jurassic Bark. Also, its been a while since I've watched anime, but if we're mentioning anime in here, I've gotta nominate Grave of the Fireflies.

Nothing like a little hope.
