I've never been a big fan of Tomlin for that reason. He took someone else's talent and won a Super Bowl, but I have yet to see him put his fingerprints on this team. Does he even do anything? Dick LeBeau calls the defensive plays and Arians calls the offensive plays, so what exactly does he do? I'm not trying to minimize his job or whatever, but what does he do? He wears sunglasses and recites Jim Fassel post-game interviews. I don't think he's a bad coach, I just think he suddenly got showered with a ton of praise, while Whisenhunt completely reinvented the culture in Arizona and was a few plays away from making a butt end of most NFL jokes a SB winner.

Cincinnati forces a quick 3 and out on Favre. They needed that.

And just to add to my point, I'm willing to bet half the coaches in this league call their own plays, whether offensive or defensive. At least more than half, most likely. I dunno, to me Tomlin is just a figurehead...you know what I mean? Like he's there to make sure everything is in order, but on Sundays, his impact is minimal.

Lions with two breaks already. First, Ray Rice fumbles going for extra yardage, and the balls rolls out of the endzone for a touchback. Second, a Culpepper pick is negated by a roughing the passer. And now they're driving.
And Hanson misses a 45 yard FG.

And the new NFL trademark, a play is over, people are walking to the sidelines, then a receiver gets bitchy and FINALLY one of the refs throws a flag some 10 seconds after the play is over.

Why does Joseph get a penalty right there?

Ugh. Penalties are killing this Bengals/Vikings game.

ANOTHER Cincinnati penalty. What the hell man? They aren't bad calls aside from the off setting one. They're just playing like crap.

In all fairness to both Tomlin and Gruden, winning a Super Bowl isn't easy in any way. It took Cowher 15 years to do it, Tomlin did it in his second season. Dungy did it once and it wasn't until 2006. Gruden built up a great Oakland team prior to getting to Tampa and winning in his first season, and even Gruden credited Dungy when he accepted the Lombardi. Gruden is a good coach (not great, but good) but his weakness is he relies a lot on veterans with low ceilings. When they fizzle you get the weak seasons he had with the Bucs, but when he can put them in the right place (Oakland, few years in Tampa) his teams do well. Despite his QB struggles he's a solid (again not great, but good enough) evaluator of talent, drafting during his tenure Jeremy Trueblood, Davin Joseph, Cadillac Williams, Antonio Bryant and Aqib Talib. Some team will overpay for him when he returns to coaching, but I think he's a better coach then given credit for. As far as Tomlin goes, I'd assume he's mainly in game-planning and in motivating. I'd figure he and LeBeau discuss defensive tendencies, though Dick is obviously still in charge of that. I think it's too early to judge him at this point, but you wonder how he hasn't made adjustments in special teams and the secondaries with as awful as they've been. That said despite the SB, I'd agree that Wisenhunt could've done greater things the way he's run Arizona.
