You had James Cameron and his people hype for years of how Avatar was going to be a "game changer" (their favorite phrase) in FX, and well people saw that trailer back at Comic Con and thought: That's it? So we had a movie that because its James Cameron's first movie in 12 years (since his still all-time box office champ Titanic), it was talked of being the best thing since sliced bread. Then it becomes worst than bread mold. Now apparently it beats down bread again. The white elephant in the room that will sink or swim with its $250-300 million budget, people ranged from supporting to trashing it as the next Heaven's Gate of egomania gone expensive amok to the rest not caring at all. They all had one thing in common: Nobody had seen the movie. All pure speculation and impressions, but apparently this week was when advanced screenings began...and the media/Internet film critics have gone nuts for it. 89 so far at Metacritic, 92 at Rotten Tomatoes. I guess one would suspect Nick N. over at Chud calling it "a definition of masterpiece," since hey he's a nerd at a geek website. Folks well known for hyperbole. Then you see Todd McCarthy (not a nerd) at Variety writing: "Cameron delivers again with a film of universal appeal that just about everyone who ever goes to the movies will need to see."[/i] Huh. My favorite is what ole trusty Roger Ebert wrote, comparing it to....blasphemy!....Star Wars. "It takes a hell of a lot of nerve for a man to stand up at the Oscarcast and proclaim himself King of the World. James Cameron just got re-elected. "[/b] Of course its one thing to hear what everyone else has to say. Its another for you the viewer yourself seeing it. I mean I remember Superman Returns and Peter Jackson's King Kong getting great advanced early reviews, with Kong even being talked about of dethroning Titanic and winning the Oscar. Kong did neither, and less said about SR the better. To Avatar's credit, the "rough start" I mentioned earlier was the game's reviews, not the actual film's. The actual film reviews are mostly quite high. To Avatar's credit, its really the only multi-demo film coming out this month, so it will have a good shot, and all the 3-D screens will help it. It is already getting a huge amount of buzz from a casual audience. Cameron really shouldn't have Kurt Angle'd himself on the game though.

Based on what I've seen/read, it appears cliched, preachy, and tiresome.

This could be the biggest movie letdown ever. It costed them hundreds upon thousands of dollars to make it and spend another 200 grand to promote the hell out of it and people still thinks it sucks.

I still believe it's going to a 160 minute special effect laden remake of Dances with Wolves.

I don't know. It just doesn't seem as epic as advertised. The Lord of the Ring had that feeling. This one, though, not really. And I know it's not cause of the source material, since I never heard of Tolkien or the books before the movie.

I still remember seeing a trailer for this in theaters and it ending to the collective chuckling of those who just watched it.
So I still have my doubts tank you very much.

I probably wouldn't watch it till later if it wasn't James Cameron. With that being said, I'll probably watch it right away when I'm finished with this semester.

Every single review I've read is RAVING about how good it is. The only doubts I've seen left over are the cynical internet folk who are never happy with anything and who, lets face it, have already made up their minds that its going to suck no matter what.
The word of mouth after it comes out is going to keep it from bombing at least, even if its not the highest grossing movie ever.

I have a feeling it's going to be a decent, middle-of-the-road movie that snarky internet types are just hoping is the worst movie ever because they've spent so much time savaging it that it would suck to not get to shout "SEE! I TOLD YOU IDIOTS SO!!!" from the rooftops.

Seriously, it is just Dances With Wolves, but with aliens, and a much higher effects budget.
Plus the Na'vi were made to be sexy. Cameron said so himself.

Which is interesting, since that plot template was older than the hills when Dances with Wolves supplanted it as the bonafide or popular classical example of that sort of story. Some folks forget that. Anyway, Dances with Wolves in Outer Space could be good (DWW) or bad (The Last Samurai). I mean who knows? Cameron himself cites Edgar Rice Burrough, and to a degree the Princess on Mars elements are there. At least from how the plot sounds.

Alright, I'm going to be honest. The only thing that interests me about the movie is a the creepy part of me that wants to nail one of those blue cat women. And yes, I'm aware of how sad that is.

Oh, I know that plot template has been used several times, but DWW is one of the closest uses of the templates that match Avatar's use. Plus the whole South Park parody that calls it Dances With Smurfs....yeah.....
