Well it does have a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 86 on metacritic, so it doesn't look like it is going to be the 2009 Phantom Menance.

You know, why is it in movie threads such as this someone has to trot out the tired old trope of "you hate it because it's popular and just want to be cool". Where the Hell does this come from, are popular things supposed to worshiped at all times with no exception? Just because something makes a billion dollars and/or has 100% RT rating does not mean that everyone in the World likes it.
Of course the more popular something is the more hate it will get... why... because everyone has seen it, duh.
Does it ever occur to people that more people hate popular stuff because it's probably been watched by more people? Not because people are "trying to be cool" or because of "the internet hate machine", but just for the sheer fact that a greater number of people are aware of the product?
Obviously an "I hate Twilight" or "I hate the Star Wars prequels" thread or website will get a billion hits, everyone knows about it and probably has an opinion of it, and maybe just maybe they don't like it based on their own likes and dislikes and not to "be cool", whatever the Hell that's supposed to mean.
Of course you'll probably never see me in another Avatar thread as more then likely I myself will never see it, but I just wanted to throw that out there.

It could be argued that the blind haters are the reverse image of the blind lovers, who also haven't seen the film, who only have the words of other people fueling them and have convinced themselves they love it and are on a mission to defend it, regardless of whether or not they watch or watch it and find it to be the defining moment in their life. Despite the self-acknowledged inherent hypocrisy of posting in an Avatar thread, I'm just sick of hearing about it and have found the ad campaign and internet hype to be off-putting.

I'm not hating on Avatar to be cool, edgy, or because it's popular. I'm hating on Avatar because the trailer was horrible and I'm getting Battlefield Earth vibes. In cases like this I trust my gut.

I can hate Avatar without having to see it because my dislike of it stems from something that is entirely independent of the movie's quality. My issue is that to me, this film represents everything that's wrong with entertainment. It's a movie that preaches a highly opinionated, thinly-veiled message (which I will not discuss, since I don't think that'd be allowed here) behind an unholy amount of special effects that cost an even more unholy amount of money. A movie that is the epitomy of overt and over commercialization.
To be honest, I didn't care at all about this movie at first. Why should I have? If people want to see the movie, let them. They might be entertained by it and they might like it, and whether or not they like it will depend on their personal tastes. And then I watched the World Series this year. For one of the games, instead of having it game right away, I have to sit through an incredibly trite-looking promotional package that, for BASEBALL of all things, consists of clips from this movie being spliced side-by-side with hype for the game, with an overly dramatic musical score and a load of "epic" text and voiceovers. And I think to myself..."Why?" Everyone's already heard about this movie, why do I have to sit through this crap before the game? Just as I type this very post up, in the midst of the review of the score of an NFL game, I hear--above all the commentary and anything pertinent to the actual game--"AVATAR, COMING SOON TO THEATERS."
This notwithstanding the commercial for some handheld projector gadget I saw last night where instead of promoting the item itself--which was what I thought was going to be the focus of the commercial--the guy walks in to a pair of cohorts in and office and says "CHECK OUT THIS NEW AVATAR TRAILER I GOT ON MY PROJECTOR!11!11!" before the camera pans over and shows the trailer for the movie.
I mean seriously, hyping a movie is fine and all, but I feel like someone's breathing down my neck for me to see this movie. Plus I get to constantly hear how it's revolutionary and/or a modern-day masterpiece. Yeah, no thanks. If you want me to see the movie this badly, why not just take it a step further and buy me a Porsche? Maybe I'll watch it then. Maybe even four times like Cameron wants us all to.
Or maybe not.

They probably wouldn't if people didn't think they had to shout from the rooftops how much they hate [insert popular object of hate here] and how superior, enlightened, free-thinking, and intelligent they are compared to all the "retarded sheeple" who don't hate it. The smug self-satisfied superiority vibe is what makes people annoyed at hate threads.

I'll never get why people spend so much time on something they 'hate'.
People spent so much time hating that freaking Twilight that I'm starting to think they secretly liked and and were afraid to admit it.

From the reviews I've read, that seems to be the best way to describe the plot.

I personally think it looks really stupid, plus I curse it for taking the name from a movie I actually intend to see.
Still, I expect it to do huge numbers and kill everything.

To me it looks like a pretty sub par "who cares" movie that will probably make some money because there isn't anything all that great at the movies now.

I do not have a hate for the film, I have a hate with the studio. If Avatar was being released by someone else I'd see it opening day, but it's FOX's big budget project. For that I can not see it. Rothman can kiss my ass. I'm sorry Cameron but why even associate yourself with that slime?
