If Blazing Saddles never got a nom, what chance does Hangover have? Because there's 10 movies up this year. Plus Blazing Saddles, while funny, isn't the kind of funny that gets respect. But I doubt The Hangover gets a nod. I think it could. I mean, 10 films is a lot and there's no reason they only take one sci-fi movie. Avitar may be a lock, but I don't see how that necessarily precludes District 9. Plus remember, Peter Jackson's name is attached to it, and he carries a fair deal of weight with the Academy as well. Also I was going off Golden Globes as a possible precursor to the big ones, which Hangover was nominated for. And Blazing Saddles deservd an Oscar.

Yes, it did. Very few comedies get as many laughs over 30 years after the fact as Blazing Saddles did. Still no nom for it or Duck Soup, both of which are masterworks of the genre and both better than Hangover.

Don't see why not. It sucks, the oscars suck, they go hand in hand.

If The Dark Knight didn't, District 9 sure as hell wont. 1. There are twice as many spots. 2. Last year was really damn strong. I'd be willing to say that at least 3 of the best picture nominations of last year were vastly superior to this years frontrunner "Up in the Air."

No, but it should be. The movie had the best moral of any sci-fi/fantasty and/or horror movie in decades.

I thought Hurt Locker was the (statistical) frontrunner I was going by nominations. Since the awards usully go in cycles, I doubt they will give it to another unknown indy year. Granted i have yet to see hurt, but its on my to do list.

Hurt went nowhere at the B.O., which is biggest strike against it, but its one of about 3-4 quality locks (Precious and Up in the Air are the other two). This year is unpredictable because so many of the supposed "frontrunners" bombed out of contention (Road, Lovely Bones, Nine, Amelia), which has opened up potential slots for several more atypical choices.

It should but it won't. It'll lose it's spot to the far inferior Avatar most likely.

Shawshank was a "feel-good" film about people in prison who get a second chance at life. Whereas Hurt Locker {Spoiler} is a film about soldiers in armed conflict who get in very dangerous situations and ultimately decide life without combat is meaningless and do another tour of duty. Which of these seems more "Academy-friendly" to you?

Crash wasn't exactly "feel good" and that won best picture
A good film is a good film regardless of it being "Acadamy Friendly"
I was REALLY surprised Dark knight was omitted last year after all the rave it got both critically & commercially

Winner! Forrest Gump didn't flop though I was just saying that B.O takings doesn't always stop an Oscar Nomination Shawshank flopped but it got nominations Yeah, Forest Gump was at one point the fourth highest grossing film of all time. Right now, it is the 18th highest domestically and the 32nd highest worldwide. Forest Gump was anything but a flop.

In the year it was released, it was hyped as "THE film to beat" as well.

I thought District 9 was overrated, but I'm not an Academy voter. Honestly, I don't see it happening and I think that if there is a spot for a second sci-fi flick on the Best Picture list (Avatar has to be a lock at this point) it is more likely to go to Star Trek.
