His debut, no doubt about it.
The problem with his return was that it kind of...didn't have a lot of structure to it. All of a sudden, out comes Jericho, now looking like--as he was called on this very board dozens of times over--a gay magician, with a sparkly vest and a feud that was a bit odd given how poorly structured it was.
But when he debuted, they really kept up the pace with him for a long time after he first showed up. And that worked out extremely well for him.

I heard him called a gay bartender, too....but I'll agree with everything you said. Debut had more impact than return, definitely. Interrupting The Rock > interrupting Randy Orton, IMO.

His return was cool, but really it just boils down to a rehash of his debut, albeit not done quite as well.
Both times I knew it was Jericho behind the smoke and mirrors, so surprise is not even a factor in this, although I am sure his debut surprised more people.
Beyond that, as a fan of his in WCW it was awesome to see him debut and immediately be going back and forth with the Rock. Debuts today lack that kind of immediate impact...which is why they often leave the debuting wrestler struggling to get a reaction.

I was just getting back into wrestling when Jericho debuted the first time. Truth be told, I had no idea who he was, so it was a hell of an intro, but the return meant more to me.

His return sucked. Too drawn out and too obvious who it was. Plus the original is, 9 times out of 10, better than a rehash.

His debut. As a non-WCW fan, I immediately knew this guy was a star. I made some of my friends watch his return live, because I was excited, and they were bored to tears.

The clothesline on the runner was great!

Gives me goosebumps. Every. Single. F***ing. Time. As for people questioning Jericho's glittery vest in his return, it was more of a homage to his debut attire (he had the glittery open shirt).

To quote Sharon, really?!?
His debut was a million times better. His return just seemed completely botched. They took too long to do it, they shouldn't have had him clothesline the runner beforehand, the crowd was dead, the new look (as he himself has said) disconnected him with fans, and instead of The Rock, you have Orton.
Still, I remember being so happy Y2J was just back in the WWE. Twas a sad time in Wrestling without him.

The fact they didn't capture "JERICHO" flashing up on the 'Tron the second time round ruined it for me.

His initial debut. The pop for that was just amazing. I mean, it was just something to behold. Still gives me shivers down my spine when I see that place erupt when his name pops up on the screen.

*Sigh*
At the time I was so happy Jericho was back that I was totally marking out.
Now, looking at the video two years later, his return seems so lame.

1st, hands down. It was built up well. And if memory serves correctly, he was also the 1st "star" taken from WCW at the time.

I knew both him and Jericho had left, the question was at the time, who was going to debut 1st. Show was the PPV through the ring and they saved Y2J for Raw. I suppose that made more sense seeing as they built up Y2J's debut while wight was a kayfabe "surprise"

Despite the chills I stil get from seeing the first one (I was there live), I was SO much happier when he came back. I think I may have marked all over the house at that moment. I just found Jericho free WWE to be worse than PG could ever be. Return.
