Re: Kotchman. Yeah, you're right about him only really excelling at D, but that's kinda the M's forte at the moment, so it fits. And he can be a decent contact hitter. I wish we could get a big bat, but I'd rather have great defense(because the whole playing 82 games in the grand canyon).
What this deal means, at least to me, is that A)Seattle Didn't have the money we all thought they did, so signing someone like LaRoche was never a possibility B)LaRoche to Seattle wasn't anywhere near as close as the beat writers would like us to believe or C)Seattle is using its money for different reasons(Starting Pitcher?)
In somewhat related news(both about fielding and $$$), Seattle signed OF Franklin Gutierrez to a 4 year/$20MM extension. Basically, it covers this year, 2 years worth of arbitration, and his first year of FA. This is only great news, because last year he was arguably a top 5 fielding OF, and he's still only getting better. His bat really came around, too. He's hopefully got a bright future.

dang, knew I forgot about something
Re: The Big Unit.
Tis a sad day. Johnson is my third favorite player to ever wear the compass rose on his hat(Behind Griffey Jr. and Ichiro, but the aforementioned Franklin Gutierrez is making a run for the Unit's spot, along with King Felix, David Aardsma, and Mark Lowe(yeah, Mark Lowe)). I started watching the M's regularly in '96, so while it nearing the twilight of his days in Seattle, he was still as dominate as ever. I loved watching him start, and, unless Felix signs a long-term extension, he'll go down as the most dominate M's pitcher, at least for the conceivable future.
Its too bad he had his problems with team management(the President, mainly), as I'd love to see him A)Go into the HOF as a Mariner, but he'll probably go in as a Diamondback(their first?) and/or B)Come back, in a Ken Griffey Jr. capacity. If Felix would be able to learn from the past of pitching(Johnson), and the present of pitching(Cliff Lee), he'd be unstoppable. And it'd make for a hell of a marketing campaign(hyping up pitching's past, present an future)

Update! some Eastern Seaboard news sources are reporting its a minor leaguer+ Bill Hall+The money we were getting from Milwaukee in the deal that brought Bill Hall to Seattle in the first place for Kotchman. This all of a sudden becomes less of a 'trading for a 1st baseman' trade, and is starting to look like more of a 'precursor to a larger deal'

Someone on USSMariner brought up a great side to this trade for all those not really into it. If at the deadline, Kotchman is having a great rebound year, Seattle could easily be a frontrunner for the Gonzo trade. And now that Kotchman is only looking to be taking the spot of a utility player(Hall's spot) that leaves room for either a)Acquiring another 1B(either now or at the deadline) b)Acquiring a starting pitcher(preferably now) and bringing OF Michael Saunders onto the 25 man roster c)Acquiring a new LF/DH option, and then Kotchman essentially takes Branyan's spot.

RT @si_JonHeyman: Holliday agrees to $120 million, 7-year deal with Cardinals, si.com has learned. Well, it looks like the Cardinals are finally opening the vault. Considering Matt Holliday just got $17 million per year for 7 years (basically Soriano money except Matt's likely to be much more valuable), Albert has to be looking at $22 million-plus. He and Holliday are the same age (actually, Pujols' birthday is January 16th, 1980, while Holliday's is January 15th, 1980), and the two aren't even close in terms of talent/value. 2011 will be a very expensive year for StL: Holliday's 2nd year, Carpenter at $15m, Lohse over $12m, Pujols' 1st year of a new contract, and another $16m combined between Molina, Franklin and Wainwright. That is going to be $80 million for a C, 1B, LF, 3 SP, and a CL. Seven players. They better make sure not to let Julio Lugo's option vest... *please vest...please vest...StL will have to pay for 2011 unlike 09 and 10 if it vests...please vest* Don't get me wrong, it's among the best cores in all of MLB (if healthy, and Franklin doesn't suck again). But they're closing in on spending Cubs money once arbitration and free agency is factored in. It'll make for an interesting Central with STL locking up 7 players for $80 million and the Cubs committing $105 million already to 10 players (yes, that's assuming both D Lee and Lilly depart via free agency...no wonder Tom Ricketts just reorganized the team's debt structure). Edit: If I'm Pujols, I tell my agent to get me 8 years, $208 million, a private jet, a black British butler named Geoffrey, and a pony.

Yeah, the cards have to be willing to pay Pujols at the very least 22MM a season(if the market doesn't bottom out like this year, probably closer to 25 from a big east coast team(ie: the NY's, Boston, Philly if they have the cash, etc)). Unless signing Pujols really isn't in their long term plans(but that would just be downright dumb).
Man, it would be a crazy trade deadline if Pujols and A-Gon were both on the market.

I can't see Pujols in anything but Cardinal red. The fans would hate it to see him gone. Him leaving still in his prime [his whole career has been prime, but still], even approaching the historical point at which players begin to decline, would make Cards fans very...very angry. I'm sure Robby and Clash will corroborate this point. It wouldn't be right. Same as Jeter out of Yankee pinstripes.

Once upon a time, Bill Hall hit a bunch of Home Runs. You could apply that claim to pretty much any and every batter on the 2010 Red Sox.

7/$120M strikes me as a case of the Cards bidding against themselves. Seems like there weren't a lot of other teams going after him and they could've gotten him for 5 years. Great job by Boras to get Holliday that kind of deal.

Great job by Boras to get Holliday that kind of deal. Also, for the first time ever, Brian Cashman was honest when he said the Yankees had no interest in Jason Bay or Matt Holliday.
