A huge expected leap finally brings the Red Army somewhere where they should be at the top of the standings. Sorry to sound all nitpicy. But shouldn't Germany be on the top of the table? Since they have one more Silver Medal then the U.S At the present they are the most successful nation at the names

The tables are normally ranked based on total medal count. Strange, I know.

Hmmm. Had a dream I was an Olympic man. Showed those Canuck whippersnappers what it means to be a REAL athlete. Ha. More curling today, it's the sport that keeps on giving. But there are also hockey 'qualification' matches, particularly Canada's do or die against Germany at 16:30 Pacific. That should be something hopefully. And there's ladies figure skating in the afternoon too, if people may care for it. Medalling today in Pacific Time: 11:00 10K Men's Speed Skating 11:30 Women's Biathlon 13:00 Men's Giant Slalom Alpine Skiing 14:00 Nordic Combined Team Relay 14:00 Ladies' Ski Cross

Current standings at the conclusion of the solar day of February 23, 2010. (Well, the sports haven't ended yet, but they've given all their medals out anyway so what the hell.) | Gold | Silver | Bronze | Total | United States | 7 | 9 | 10 | 26 | Germany | 7 | 9 | 7 | 23 | Norway | 6 | 5 | 6 | 17 | Markov Russia | 3 | 4 | 6 | 13 | Quebec Canada Quebec | 6 | 4 | 1 | 11 | South Korea | 5 | 4 | 1 | 10 | Austria | 4 | 3 | 3 | 10 | France | 2 | 3 | 5 | 10 | Weber Switzerland | 6 | 0 | 2 | 8 | Sweden | 3 | 2 | 2 | 7 | Netherlands | 3 | 1 | 2 | 6 | China | 3 | 1 | 1 | 5 | Poland | 0 | 3 | 1 | 4 | Italy | 0 | 1 | 3 | 4 | Halak Slovakia | 1 | 1 | 1 | 3 | Plekanec Czech Republic | 1 | 0 | 2 | 3 | Japan | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | Australia | 1 | 1 | 0 | 2 | Latvia | 0 | 2 | 0 | 2 | Kostitsyns' Belarus | 0 | 1 | 1 | 2 | Croatia | 0 | 1 | 1 | 2 | Slovenia | 0 | 1 | 1 | 2 | Great Britain | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 | Estonia | 0 | 1 | 0 | 1 | Finland | 0 | 1 | 0 | 1 | Borat Kazakhstan | 0 | 1 | 0 | 1 |
Not much major change at present. The Soviets get two medals, Norway has 3, the Yankees get some random silver and Canada has her sixth Gold.

Off hand how many medals would the Soviets have if they were actually still the USSR as opposed just to Russia and a half dozen other countries?

Let's see...Estonia, Latvia, Belarus, Kazakhstan...5 silvers and a bronze more. They would move just one step up to third.

The latest Canadian 'winner' for this ski cross is no Shaun White I'm afraid. Her discussion about her win doesn't really excite the Quebecois ness in me.

A few cliff notes for women's FS: * Kim Yu-Na from Korea hasn't lost a competition all year, and is expected to take this in a cakewalk. She does battle nerves, however, and was has been beaten in the in the short and long program this season by two different skaters. * Miki Ando (JPN) was able to beat her in the short program earlier this season, and is probably the only one who has a chance of outscoring her here. She's the only woman to ever land a quad, but she probably won't do it here. * Mao Asada (JPN) will be doing two triple axels (a jump only a handful of women have done), but her attempts usually are not fully rotated and often end up costing her points. * Of the two American girls, Rachel Flatt (the blond one) probably has the best chance to medal (she beat Kim in the long program earlier this year, but only because Kim totally imploded). Mirai Nagasu is adorable, but she has very spotty jump technique. Yes, I care way too much about this sport.

Well, he DID come out of retirement just to compete. The least they could've done was give him the gold. He attempted a quadruple axel for crying out loud! [/sarcasm] Seriously, this guy is being a mega-douche, and by all rights, should have his medal stripped for being a sore loser.

Today at 15:30 Pacific, US and Canada women's hockey play for gold. Hmmm! ;D American 'crappers, BTW, might be interested to know that CTV, the main Olympics broadcaster up here, is doing little Olympics vignettes with Trish Status talking to athletes, trying to do different sports, etc. They intro'd her item tonight with a quick montage of her in the WWE...

Game over folks, Yu-na Kim just threw it down. She was fabulous. It's ridiculous how much better she is than the rest of the field. Her coach was one of my favorites back when he competed, so I'm happy for him as well.
