The only thing Jay Leno did wrong thoughout the entire thing was talk about it in interviews and in monologues. If he didn't do that, he'd be seen as a much more sympathetic figure of the whole thing. It definatly wasn't his fault, but he did nothing to help himself. And let's not forget using a joke over a decade old. I think Leno's ratings prove that people didn't watch Leno because he was funnier than Letterman or anyone else. They didn't watch him because he had better interviews. They watched him because they thought he was a nice guy. The controversy tarnished that image.

The thing is, Leno was kind of the face of it, and he was a pretty big douche about the whole thing. It's not entirely his fault, not by a longshot, but he's the easiest guy to mock, because he was the guy that was the face of the whole fiasco. The only thing Jay Leno did wrong thoughout the entire thing was talk about it in interviews and in monologues. If he didn't do that, he'd be seen as a much more sympathetic figure of the whole thing. It definatly wasn't his fault, but he did nothing to help himself. I think a lot of people are still pretty pissed that he came back at ALL. He didn't need to....he's financially set. That right there kinda excludes him from the "not his fault" reasoning. He could have said no to NBC. No one was holding his wife hostage to get him back on the air or anything.

According to THRFeed he's beating Letterman by .1. But his median age is at 56(!!), while Conan's was 46. So, thus far it would seem that NBC got rid of Conan to gain an average .1 in ratings, and hit a demographic a decade older. Let's give them a pat on the back. Please let Letterman beat Jay Leno... ;D

Honestly? I'm genuinly surprised. Sure, I didn't expect Leno to get all his viewers back, but that drop is pretty sustantial to anything anyone could have predicted. I'm with Parrish and want to see how this second week did compared to Letterman because if Letterman's getting those viewers then we're in for something interesting. Count me in too with the surprise camp. Leno had a strong base when he left, and I figured those that had migrated to Letterman, Kimmel, Conan, or turned the TV would return. From that article... "that Leno is not gaining viewers and that his ratings for his second week were down dramatically from his first week. "Did Leno really peeve off the younger generation?

I love how they they slam Conan's rating, like getting rid of him was the right move. Conan was screwed because of the lead in, I'd bet he'd be doing better numbers than anyone in late night if they had given him time to get his base together. What rating's did Leno get when he started his first run compared to Carson?

LET'S REMEMBER THREE THINGS PEOPLE:
#1 Even BEFORE the announcement about Conan pushing back/leaving the tonight show, he beat Letterman NINE WEEKS IN A ROW. By the time the announcement came, Conan wasn't failing by any means.
#2 The ONLY REASON NBC salvaged Leno over Conan is LENO'S CONTRACTUAL BUY-OUT was BIGGER. While Conan's walking away with 40 million, LENO WOULD HAVE WALKED AWAY WITH 80.
#3 While the initial blunder WAS NBC's fault, LENO was an absolute schmuck-jerk hybrid about the entire thing. Granted, I understand that he wants A) a TV show and B) Money, he had nothing to gain by BLATANTLY LYING about what was happening and TRYING TO PEG THE ORDEAL ON CONAN.
Now that we've hammered that home, let's take a look at a dramatic recreation of every Tonight Show monologue ever:

I don't fault Leno too much for that (though there are plenty of other things to fault him for), but I am glad to hear this because it's exactly what NBC deserved.

I'm thinking nWo Late Night w/ Eric Bischoff would get higher ratings.

I hate Leno and I'm glad his show is falling in the ratings. I used to like his show, but I refuse to watch since he royally screwed over Conan.

I have one solution for NBC: The Tonight Show with Craig Ferguson. YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!! Ferguson's the best thing going in late night right now IMO, I would love to see him get a bigger show, either this or take over for Letterman when he retires.

I would dig that, but CBS will never go for it. I wonder if they still have that plan of wangling it in front of Jon Stewart. A mistake if you ask me.

I think Jon would be a good choice considering he's got great confidence in interviews and could come up with some good material for the shows but you'd then have to remove him from a show he established into one of the most well known in the world for the pure craziness of it.

Craig Ferguson would be awesome on the Tonight Show, but he wouldn't know how to handle a sidekick, a band, & decent lighting! If he did it, I would have to demand that Wavy Crocodile be his go-to sidekick. "Whatado Everybody *waves*" = Best Catchphrase Ever!

Which is why its a mistake for him to leave. After seeing Stewart's perfect dead-on brilliant dressing down of a certain talk show host last night...The Daily Show is his legacy. This is him at his best. This is what he's good at, using smarts and humor to tell the "news" often distorted by cartoonish cable news network antics that seem more silly and juvenile than something like a cable TV show "comedy." It's telling when after Walter Cronkite died, a poll asked of all the news broadcasters on the major networks and cable news... "Who does America trust the most?"Stewart was voted #1. A comedian. Plus his guests he tries usually to get interesting people in politics or academia or entertainment (usually with a political bent). He's a comedy hero of our generation much like Conan and spawn from the Daily Show tree like Colbert, Steve Carrell, etc. If he takes over Letterman...well he's expected to tone down the "politics" and just be your ordinary late night talk show. And obviously more pressured to book ratings-friendly guests...it won't be Jon Stewart. Just Jon Stewart hosting a show for a bigger (potential) audience for more money.

Well, they're stuck with him until he decides to step aside, they put Jimmy Fallon on the Tonight Show, he bombs, and they bring Jay back again. Repeat until they finally fire Jeff Zucker.
I know one thing. Jack Donaghy never would have let this happen on his watch.
