I dont see this as Family Guy jumping the shark, more of a break from tradition. I do agree that Family guy is running on fumes at this point. They just arent even trying. BTW for my absolute hatred of anything Kesha-related, the Simpsons intro was pretty good. I kind of think that this episode was sort of a stroke for Seth's ego, sort of to say "I can put anything out there and it'll be loved by a lot of people, just watch this!". At this point he really doesn't have to try, but I still think he does try pretty hard with AD and the Cleveland Show

I don't understand the point of complaining about cartoons when you could just turn them off altogether if they bother you that much. I don't understand the point of complaining about threads when you could just not click on them if they bother you that much.

Random side note I just read, the episode is a based on an old episode of All in the Family where Archie gets locked in the cellar for the weekend. Which is a good episode That's a good episode just for the scene at the very end. Archie: Please...God, just help me. If it's my time just show your face... *black janitor shows up in the cellar, unlocks the door* Janitor: Hey there Mr. Bunker. Archie: Oh Christ...the Jeffersons were right! The one with Archie and Meathead in the whine cellar was pheonominal

I liked it.
I think that poop eating stuff was supposed to throw people off with the typical "FAMILY GUY SUCKZORZ! WHY DO I STILL WATCH THIS SHOW WHEN ALL I DO IS COMPLAIN ABOUT IT?!!?", and then hard turn into the heavy stuff. To me it could show they could go deep when they want to, and it's good when they do, but the cutaways and flashbacks are their bread and butter, they're what people watch the show for. It's supposed to be dumb retarded humor, and I take it for what it is.

Because it's not like that's what the whole point of forums are or anything.

Honestly.....I called it a completely masturbatory effort on Seth's part. It's just him talking to himself for nearly 35-40 minutes or so, then clips. It's not exactly bad aside from the poop eating but then again it shows 2 things.
1. The people that complain that FG is all cutaways and non sequiters are going to complain about this episode no matter what
2. Without the cutaways, the writers are forced to do better stuff, and it comes off as maudlin at best and really just trying TOO hard to either be un-funny or keep people tuned in.

I suppose if you care about a talking dog's existential crisis, it's good. But it's not as heavy as it thinks it is.
What's wrong with cut away gags? The criticism was that the humor was not from the plot, just from the random cut away gags. They've been working on more situational humor, but the Family Guy writers are just not good enough to pull off something like this.

For all the times FG takes heat for the "remember the time" manatee jokes, at least those are funny 50 odd percent of the time. FG never really works when it tries to be straight situational comedy because all the characters are so unlikable (to me at least), it only works when they try to be as irreverent as possible. Your mileage my vary of course, but that's how I see it.

Problem is, they're relying too much on them. And some of them (Twitty for example) have been beaten into the ground

Early in the show's run they seemed to attempt to make the family somewhat likable, but they gave up on that pretty quickly. If your characters are unlikable, why should anybody care when they get "deep" scenes or whatever? The Simpsons spent years establishing the family as, despite their shortcomings, likable. It means a lot more when serious things happen to them.

i didnt like the episode cause i just didnt think is was that funny, but i think they were just trying something different to tell the critics see we dont always have to use cutaway gags to make a show

Something I'm pondering: Was that the longest cartoon to ever feature just one person's voice? I can't even think of any cartoons that featured just one guy outside of Mel Blanc, and those were only a few minutes long.

Jokes involving excrement and "deep" character moments. Talk about opposite ends of the spectrum.
Like people are saying: it doesn't matter when you try to show that a character is incredibly deep if up to that point they've been shown as the polar opposite. You can't force character development on someone like that and expect it to stick.

And don't even get me started Lois's various asshatery since the revival.

You can't force character development on someone like that and expect it to stick. It's not really that much of a stretch of character development tho. Stewie and Brian are easily the most fleshed out characters, and nothing from the episode strayed too far from where the characters already were at. Well, except maybe the poop eating. But, the fact that Brian's contemplated suicide and that Stewie and him actually like each other isn't too much of a stretch

Can't say I liked the episode, but I don't think it was TOO bad ....... well, until the musical bits. I haven't seen Family Guy in ages and when I saw how quickly they abandoned the format from the early episodes when they came back, it was pretty easy to stay away for me.
Simpsons was really good, and not just 'really good' for a newer episode, I actually laughed a great number of times. But I'm most surprised with how good of a show Cleveland and American Dad have been since coming on. I'm sure Seth has influence with their direction, but it feels like his 'Smackdown' where you can easily tell other writers make the most contribution/content, whereas Family Guy (his 'RAW' so to speak) has his fingerprints all over it. I'll even go and far to say that I think both American Dad/Cleveland Show have surpassed South Park as the best of the current animated shows. I still like South Park a great deal, but nearly every episode is a commentary or movie parody, and a lot of the jokes, though funny, can be seen a mile away.
