They cannot release JR if his contract expires. Hell, even if they do, they cannot keep him longer than the contract would last for. I wouldn't put past WWE to fire JR on the 29th out of spite. I think it's less just to spite him than to make sure the no-compete clause can be enforced (ie : Kurt Angle).

No he doesn't - contract was about to expire anyway. I thought if he was released he had to wait three months before he can appear on a wrestling tv show or PPV? That's the way they done it since Raven left and appeared on TNA in the same week back in 2002.

I have one thing to say on this dark day... PLEASE KEEP KNOX! And for the love of all that is sacred, push the man! It'll be worth it, I promise! I hope you don't cry next Thursday when WWE finish their annual spring cleaning.

Full disclosure, I won't be losing an iota of sleep over this.
That being said, I really think Shelton could have been used better like everybody else, but unfortunately, there was also somebody more charismatic.

No, she isn't. She's horrifically sloppy, and is almost as injury prone as Ashley/Kennedy. I can't call Melina a bad worker, after she and McCool had the best women's match in years at Night of Champions (I believe).

So the moral of the story is: Don't be late,Don't have outside interests and don't pursue higher education. And its easier to get fired if you are a lady,I mean its not like Mickie ever trashed a hotel room.

Why does the name of the thread need to single out Mickie as being the biggest shock or loss?
If anything, it should read ......., including Funaki. He is the biggest shock, I honestly thought he had a job for life.

I know the OP has a hard-on for Mickie James, but really, how are any of these guys/gals "major stars" even by fanboy standards? If this was 2004/05 then Shelton would be borderline, but that's it.
But yeah, Shelton is probably TNA-bound. They are doing reasonably well at featuring talent that WWE did not fully cultivate (Anderson, Pope, Morgan, Jordan, etc) so I have no doubt Shelton will be next. The others? Blah.

Funkai. Geez, it's been a long, entertaining, and just damn fun road. For years now, over a decade in fact, he's been with us. Today, they finally got him. He was the poster boy of keeping your job for so long, but it's over now. It was one hell of a great ride buddy. God speed Funaki, God speed. Indeed! Although now he's gone nobody is safe.

WWE has come to terms on the release of WWE Divas Mickie James and Katie Lea Burchill as well as Superstars Shelton Benjamin, Kung Fu Naki, Slam Master J and Jimmy Wang Yang as of today, April 22, 2010. We wish them the best in all future endeavors.

No he doesn't - contract was about to expire anyway. Yes he does. He was released BEFORE his contract expired. Therefore, the no-compete clause is enforced.

I wouldn't put past WWE to fire JR on the 29th out of spite. I think it's less just to spite him than to make sure the no-compete clause can be enforced (ie : Kurt Angle). They cannot do that. They cannot have a no compete for longer than the contract. If it expires the 30th and they fire him the 29th, on the 1st he's free. if they have him sit it out, they will have the 90 day off tv clause that Taz and Coach had though. Basically, if he is to leave, they are better off letting him sit out until the end than firing him. No he doesn't - contract was about to expire anyway. Yes he does. He was released BEFORE his contract expired. Therefore, the no-compete clause is enforced. They can only hold him out the length of the contract. If there is 90 days left, he is out 90 days but, if there is only 40, he is out 40.

Shelton was the only one that surprised me. I guess it's now either Kofi's or Evan Bourne's responsibility to take the annual MITB "Holy Crap" bump.

I'm going to miss Mickie too, but how much can you possibly know about the divas if you think she was the only good worker? Beth's a good worker. Melina's a good worker. Gail Kim is a great worker. Natalya is a great worker. Katie WAS a good one of course Mickie too. Jillian is actually a good worker and so is Michelle McCool. The rest suck though. Just a difference of opinion, I guess. McCool's passable, but so terribly bland I don't care, and I don't at all like Melina. Natalya and Beth are okay, just never cared for them and Gail Kim has done nothing but stink up the ring since she came to WWE. Plus, Katie and Jillian were / are total jobbers so do they really count? Difference of opinion? Haha. No. Whether a wrestler has good ring psychology, can carry, sell, and execute is not a matter of opinion at all. Just because Jillian and Katie aren't able to showcase much offense doesn't mean they are bad workers, so yes they count. Beth is THE best in the divas division at carrying and selling as far as I'm concerned. And her being a total powerhouse doesn't hurt either. She's not a bad wrestler with just brute strength like say a Chyna. Michelle McCool has improved a lot, and while I still don't like her because of the whole Taker thing, I can say she's as good as Trish ever was in the ring. I don't think I should have to explain Natalya or Gail to you because it's obvious you haven't seen enough of their work to form a logical explanation as to why you believe they aren't good or great. I won't tell you to go watch Gail's stuff in TNA because there's a reason you're posting in the WWE section, so instead I'll tell you to go watch Gail Kim when she first came to the WWE in 2003. Watch her matches against Trish, Lita, Nidia, and mainly Victoria. If you do that you'll be marking out for her forever and highly doubt you'll ever say she ''stinks up the ring'' again.
