I've also kind of wondered if he's not afraid that when these films DO hit Blu Ray...if they ARE best-sellers, they'll attract the attention of the "let's REMAKE it!" crowd. Thus the delay on bringing some of his better known and bigger hit films to Blu. Kind of odd that with all the remake-itis going around, Steven Speilberg's films have been largely left alone. Not that I'm complaining, mind. ;D That sounds like more of a good thing than bad. Because, really...that's what it's going to come down to. It could mean a big risk = big reward though. You announce that you're remaking classics like the sort and people finally get angry and stop seeing them. It's a crazy theory, but who really knows. Of course, Spielberg could be waiting to release them because he's going back into the editing wing and adding new special effects to the shark or something. Haven't you seen the South Park episode, "Free Hat"?

Considering my arachnophobia, I sure as hell won't be seeing this in 3D.

Gotta admit, the discussion about "when movies are going to hit Blu-Ray" is giving me nostalgia for the days when DVD was the big, hot new thing on the market. Remember the days when every DVD cost at least $25, and the release of the Star Wars trilogy was big news?
IDK, it just makes me happier that I'm actually waiting it out this time until Blu-Ray has supplanted DVD as the end-all, be-all of home entertainment viewing to make the jump. Because, no joke, I was probably the first person in my town to buy a DVD player...back when the CHEAPEST device at Best Buy cost $249. ;D

I'm not fully committed to Blu-Ray, even though I do have a player downstairs (it was about $150, which is a deal right now). The only Blu-Rays i'll end up buying these days are the big ones. I'm not going to switch out, simply because DVD is still out there, and favorite movies of mine are still being released on DVD. When are you going to see Surf Ninjas on Blu-Ray, or a horror film like The Frighteners?

As I said in the other thread, I anixous for the Beyond and Maniac to come out. I imagine it's only a matter of time for these as well. What bugs me is having to rebuy some of these titles. Sure I love some of these movies, but do I really want to rebuy say Halloween 5?

I don't regret making the leap to Blu-ray one bit - watching the original Halloween on my 50 inch plasma is nothing short of breathtaking. It's like having my own personal 35mm film print that I can watch at any time. Granted, my disc drive that play both Blu-ray and HD-DVD, meaning I can enjoy high def releases of films not yet out on Blu-ray (such as The Frighteners, for example).

TR I'm going to tell you now that the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray is breathe taking when you have the proper set up. If anyone tells you otherwise they either need glasses or they hooked up their stuff inappropriately (maybe didn't use HDMI cable, or thought they could use a SDTV).
Also, Fulci and Friskey, for the movies you don't want to re-buy you don't have to. Blu-Ray players can play DVDs so there are plenty of movies I won't waste time re-buying such as the Guyver movies. In fact, Blu-Ray players actually up convert regular DVDs and make them look nicer than they do on DVD Players. Basically a Blu-Ray player is a Blu-Ray player and a superior DVD player.

Plus, playing a DVD on a Blu-Ray player actually makes the picture quality better. That's one of the positives I get.
Of course, watching a great looking Blu-Ray movie is amazing as well. I know this is not Horror talk, but UP! is the most gorgeous looking thing ever.

It's just for me it's one of those things where I may have to make a decision on upgrading to Blu or not. As it stands now my philosophy on blu-ray is: If it's a film I want and don't have, get it on blu. If it's a film I have on dvd already then I have to decide if I want the upgrade or the upgrade is worth getting. This is where I run into trouble. Sure great stuff like Dead & Buried, City of the Living Dead, and Living Dead at Manchester Morgue are out on Blu, but I already own the stuff on Blu and I can't yet justify buying it without a price drop. Then they're are titles where no doubt they will be upgraded no matter what: Suspiria, NOTLD, Tenebre, The Beyond, etc. all fall into this category. One of the more bothersome things are companies that release dvds and then several months later release the blu-ray of the same movie. That's just annoying as ^&%$!

For those of us who have a region free player, Suspiria is already available on Blu in Europe, and, as expected, is glorious. 2. Yeah, I hate it when companies do that, although lately, they've just been skipping the DVDs altogether and getting straight to the Blu-ray, which I like.

A lot of brand new Blus go for around $25 to $30...but NOES was $20 on the day it was release...LESS than some brand new horror DVDs!

Man, I have to say that my intent with my little diatribe wasn't to touch off a little debate about Blu-Rays. I definitely know that they're better than DVD's and don't question that in the slightest. All I was saying was that I find it a little funny to see the exact same thing happening now that occurred over a decade ago when DVD was starting to make inroads on VHS - especially the inflated prices, what with Lethal Weapon being worthy of a $29.99 price tag again and all. OK...on to some horror, there's a new review up on my blog for my favorite werewolf flick of all time, Joe Dante's The Howling. Check it out! ihrregistry.blogspot.com

Ah, the official Friday TR "I reviewed a movie" threadkilling post.
Anyway...has anybody here seen Daybreakers? It's got Sam Neill, which is always a plus (the guy is legit one of my idols), but beyond him, is there any value to this thing? Just curious as to whether I should pick it up or not.

My brother enjoyed it, but I haven't gotten a chance to check it out yet. Does look like fun though. Can't go wrong with Willem Dafoe with a crossbow. I did hear that the Blu-Ray though has an exclusive 2-hour making-of documentary, so that may be reason enough to check it out.

I plan on seeing it eventually. It'll most likley replace The Descent Part 2 after the review I heard about it today. I suppose I can understand starting with the US ending since it's a direct-to DVD, but everything I hear has been 95% negative with only moments of positivity. Back to the point of the reply, Daybreakers looks extremely interesting to me considering it's plot is something I've wondered about a time or two. So...no, I haven't seen it...but I plan on doing so. And your review was very good, TR. The Howling is an awesome film that is normally boged down because people think of the...less than stellar sequels.

Alright, I'm doing a complete 180 of my earlier "let's forget this whole DVD/Blu-Ray thing" post, because that just enrages me, and it's getting to be more and more frequent that they release bare-bones DVDs and throw all the special features on the Blu-Ray. Underhanded much? And your review was very good, TR. The Howling is an awesome film that is normally boged down because people think of the...less than stellar sequels. Hey, Howling VI: The Freaks is an unparalleled masterwork that ranks right up there with The Godmonster of Indian Flats. Do you believe in the monster? I don't believe in the monster.
