Well it was this time 4 years ago I went to see The Omen remake in the cinema on it's opening day. It had it's moments (opening sequence was cool/creepy) but nothing on the original (as is the case 99.9% of the time) Ah, yes, the 6/6/06 release date. Although if I'm not mistaken, didn't the producers shoot themselves in the foot by getting it released on a TUESDAY or something just so they could have that catchy calendar date? NEW IHR INDUCTION!! This time, it's one of the true overlooked gems of the horror genre, the 1962 thriller Eyes Without a Face. Check it out at the link in my sig.

Well, they also shot themselves in the foot by not making it very good. You could tell it was a rushed production idea, they basically took the script, hired all new actors, and put in ridiculous hallucinations from Julia Stiles character, and you had their movie. I hate that almost as much as I hate the conceit of a Saw sequel every year. You remake a movie because the date is 6/6/06. Good logic. Here's an idea, why not release a movie that f'n original to take advantage of it, instead?

You know, I OWN that friggin' movie (it came with the Omen box set); it got dusted off ONCE for a little mini- Omen franchise review, and that box is where it will stay for the remainder of time.

Yeah, you'd think they would've realized it was coming by, say, 6/6/01 and given themselves proper time to prepare for it, at least.

SO um....Splice is.....uh...I'm not real sure how I feel about it to be honest. It was....interesting. Those reviews that compared it to Re-Animator were a bit off the mark. It isn't really like that at all. But hey, it features {Spoiler}One instance of consensual human/monster sex and an instance f human/monster rape Still not sure how I feel about this one. The tone was all over the place, the ending was rushed, and for about 90% of its runtime there were very few actual horror elements.

Which one of you guys was the one who preferred Return of the Living Dead Part II to the original? Based on your recommendation, I decided to check it out on Netflix last night and...I'm sorry, but I think I'll have to hit you now.
Ok, well it wasn't THAT bad but I didn't quite enjoy it. The whole lead kid being the wittiest character of the movie despite only being about 6 didn't fly with me, all of the other characters were annoying and spent the rest of the movie running around screaming and/or crying and the zombies were played more for laughs instead of an actual threat. The original Return struck the balance between horror and comedy MUCH better, because this one really had neither. The zombies weren't scary and the "funny" moments weren't funny. But I can't honestly give a review of the whole movie considering I fell asleep during it about the half-way mark. And when I woke back up, there were only 9 minutes left so I just shut the whole thing off.
I do wanna check out Splice, but I'm thinking I might wait until video for that, especially with The A-Team and Toy Story 3 coming out in the next few weeks.

However, it is not a horror movie in the least just like I suspected. The only horror part comes in the last 5 minutes. Also, I love the fact that I finally get some live action Monster Girl action. lol I love my Monster Girls.

And, you know, looking at it purely as most people look at zombie movies, yeah, it's pretty bad. I'm sorry about my recommendation leading to you renting a movie that you didn't like, but really, it shouldn't have been a surprise, because my take on zombie cinema is different from pretty much everyone else on the freakin' planet. I am someone who is so goddamn sick of zombie movies that take themselves SO seriously in an attempt to haphazardly make the assertion that human being = flesh-eating zombie that, to me, a completely unapologetic goofy and cheesy undead-fest like ROTLD Part II is refreshing. That, and you have to hand it to any movie with the balls to make a "bully kid accidentally sucks zombie poison, turns into a zombie himself, murders his mother and then attempts to murder several more people before the heroes throw him off a high-rise and electrocute his ass" (credit to Joe Bob Briggs for that line) one of main story arcs. ;D

I got it off my roommate's Netflix streaming so it's not like I actually paid for it. But I usually prefer my zombie movies to be either unintentionally funny or straight comedy (ie Zombieland). It almost seemed like Part II was trying too hard. The "humor" just fell flat with me. But I'll probably try to give it another chance and check out the last half I fell asleep on. I got as far as the zombie kid murdering his mother and didn't see him getting thrown off a high-rise.

Part of the problem is that the movie TOTALLY lost the audience I saw it with in the third act, and they were cracking jokes and laughing like mad. Granted, it did go into absurd territory and some of that stuff couldn't help but be played for laughs, but the movie never got them back. Apparently word of mouth with general audience is pretty toxic. I get it. It's certainly not a movie for the normal masses.

It's over now, but I just DVR'ed an IFC showing of Evil Dead 2. I'll be honest, haven't really seen it. *puts on armor* Only seen Army of Darkness, which isn't really horror, just batguano insane. What should I be expecting here? I read that it was a balanced mix of the horror of the first one and the overall goofiness of the third one, that's it.

I'd say that's about all you need to know going in, if you don't want to be spoiled. The fact that it's a perfect balance, as you mentioned, is why it's often regarded as the best of the trilogy. Hope you enjoy it.

So yeah....just watched four out of the five TOMIE films over the last two days....and I have to say that I think this is a good series. Tomie herself is a pretty nasty character, something between a siren, a demon, and an onryo ghost. I mean, just the concept of a girl that never dies is intriguing in and of itself, but then you add the idea of every man she meets falling for her (and ultimately going insane and trying to destroy her) and it becomes even more interesting. Thus far, I think Takashi Shimizu's entry was the best of the bunch, though Tomie: Replay was pretty good as well.
God, do I ever have a bunch of Asian cinema to watch (thanks to Hollywood Video's "going out of business" sale). I've also got Pray, Whispering Corridors and Suicide Cllub along with Ichi the Killer left as well.

Whispering Corridors and Suicide Club are two movies that I can pop in any time and be amazed by, and Ichi the Killer...it's the first Miike movie I ever saw, and it's nothing short of total insanity. Ah, the good ol' Tomie series. What an awesome concept that series has! I'm a big fan of the movies as well (hell, I've reviewed the vast majority of them in these threads) - and you'll be surprised to learn that there's actually EIGHT Tomie films now. I own the first five in a box set, and just bought Tomie: Beginning and Tomie: Revenge in a two-pack. The only one I haven't seen is the most recent one, Tomie vs. Tomie. I'm inclined to agree with you - Shimizu's Tomie: Re-birth is the best in the series. The guy just flat-out knows how to do horror, and the only reason I haven't inducted him into the WC horror hall is because I'm afraid I'll get called out for turning it into the Ju-On Hall of Fame. Also, Miki Sakai does a really amazing job playing Tomie in Tomie: Re-birth, striking just the right balance between evil and quirky. Definitely my favorite version of the character in the series.

Evil Dead 2 update:
Haven't gotten a chance to watch it yet. Stuff always happens and by the time that I want to watch it, it's a little too late for my standards. Tonight's actually the best night, so...expect a review sometime tomorrow...hopefully.

Yeah, so far she's the Tomie I've liked the best. The others were good, but Sakai has thus far been the only one to really hit the right notes with the character for me. The girl in Tomie: A new Face was....well, she was good in the role, but played it a bit too coquette-ish for me. Like, she was a bit TOO flirty and bubbly in the role. Though the part of the film where her photographer friend is developing the pictures he took of her, and he sees the REAL face of Tomie....THAT is one creepy sequence!

That is indeed a good little scene. Personally, my favorite scene in the entire series is in the original film; the protagonist takes Tomie's body out into the woods to bury her, only to turn around and see the headless body walking toward her, all while the creepiest music known to man plays on the soundtrack. BRRRRRRRRRRRR.

BRRRRRRRRRRRR. That IS a good scene! You know another great scene from the series is when Tomie's severed head is in the tank in the hospital, and the director's daughter is watching time lapsed footage of the head on video....and we see Tomie's spinal column jut out suddenly and start to sprout writhing, squiggling NERVES.....YUCK. Great stuff there though...especially when Tomie's eyes blink and look around. This has fast become my new favorite horror series, I'll tell you that. Between Takashi Miike, Shimizu, and now the Tomie series....I am fast becoming a convert to the "J-Horror" genre (as if I wasn't already). ;D It only makes me sad that more people in my area WON'T give these movies a chance. Of ALL the Asian movies I bought from Hollywood Video, only Suicide Club had any sort of "previously played" look to it. The others ALL looked like they were brand new, and had never been touched. As Deadpool can probably attest, that MUST mean that they hadn't been rented out very much, as the more popular movies I've purchased from places like that have ALL been either heavily smudged, scuffed, or thumbprinted, or scratched to hell and back (though still playable).
