So I was browsin YouTube lookin for cute things and started looking up Fennec Foxes because we all know they are some of the cutest creatures EVER.
While looking up videos I saw a lot of ppl keep them as... PETS?
DO WANT...anyone else on my boat?

It might be cute but its not a domestic animal. Unlike dogs or cats that will become willing members of your family, a fox will basically be an unwilling prisoner. People who own a fox usually have to keep them caged up when ever they can't watch them every second, so the poor animal stays in a cage 20+ hours a day. You also will constantly be putting people at risk since they are likely to attack, or bite people they aren't used to. Also unlike dogs the fox is a solitary animal which means that if you are not their mate they prefer to be left alone. In any case there are more then enough domestic animals out there that need a home. So why make your life, and the life of a naturally wild animal miserable just so you can have a pet thats cute and different?

It and the domesticated silver fox are the only fox species that can. They're considerably quite social animals and are tamer than many other wild animals commonly kept as pets.

1. I already have "domestic animals." 2. Ppl say the same thing for a lot of animals that arent ordinary like pet snakes and such. They do fine in captivity. 3. I just mentioned what I saw. I didnt do any research to get a Fennec, but they are just adorable. Like Snakes, they might do perfectly well in captivity. Or maybe not. But just because an animal is not a dog/cat doesnt mean u cant keep it as a pet. Thats nonsense made by dog/cat lovers and ppl who are afraid of anything different.

Fennec Foxes are thought to be a very different animal, since they are actually social. Still, they are not dogs or cats, they require a lot of investment and responsibility. Don't take one on if you can't handle that.

I like how the cat is acting in that first video. He's not sure if that thing is a cat or a dog or what. He's like, "Hmm, this is interesting. Could be a cat but it could be a dog. Maybe it will play with me. I don't know, maybe it wants to bite me. I'll just play with this fuzzy toy and every so often I'll 'accidentally' paw at the creature to see if it will play or not." Then at the end of the video it looks at the camera like, "Uhhh, okaaaay."

Snakes for the most part are very low maintenance animals. A "pet" fox isn't.

Like I said before most people who have a Fennec end up keeping it in a cage 20+ hours a day. Unless you super dedicated and willing to spend almost every waking hour looking after and caring for your pet fox I would advise against getting one. Same goes for basically every other high maintenance exotic pet even some types of fish and most smart birds like parrots.

You might want to even have a room set aside for their use, since a cage won't cut it, and they are escape artists. Also, I wouldn't get one unless you had another pet to keep them company. They have a lot of energy, and without needing to hunt their food down, they are not short on free time.

I guess I'm just sensitive about subjects like this after having worked in a few zoos, and a few wildlife conservation centers. You'd be surprised how many people come in trying to unload their "pets" because they simply didn't realize the dedication and effort it takes to take care of some of these animals. Many times the former pets are put down because they are either in such bad shape or they are ruined mentally from the prolonged stress and neglect.

Are you willing to give it an entire room of your hose, and fill said room with sand?
Because as a desert animal, you're going to need to keep it in a similar environment.

The sand is probably unnecessary, as long as you afford them a different outlet besides digging. Still, they are very, very active, especially because your house is not inhospitable enough for them to have to sleep or hide under ground during daylight hours.

You'd also have to make sure the house is secure enough so they can't escape (even fennecs bred to be pets would probably still do this, I don't think they "home" like cats and dogs to their natural territory. Or, you could just get a ferret and have less cost hoops and legal restrictions to jump through for your "exotic" fix. They seem to behave similarly.

Geez you guys taking things way too seriously.
This was suppose to be more of a "Look at how cute/awesome these foxies are, how awesome would it be to have one as a pet", rather than, "Oh hai guys, I am gonna go get a Fennec now!". And I know all about commitment with pets, trust me...but since I dont have many friends, I do have plenty of time to spend with my pets
