I finally watched Smackdown last night for the first time in almost a year. I was definitely impressed by how much more actual wrestling there is on the show compared to Raw, but what also caught me was JBL's job on commentary. I had expected his usual loud, obnoxious tone, but he really came across as being calm and somewhat of a tweener. But what I really liked was that he expressed a lot of knowledge on wrestling history (which I feel like Michael Cole knows little of). My favorite moment was when they were talking about King of the Ring, and JBL reminded Cole he was in the tournament once: "I lost to Jake Roberts."
What do you all think?

JBL is awesome as a heelish commentator. He is what Lawler used to be before he became a joke. I LOVE that JBL throws in his knowlage when the chance arises, its refreshing to hear him talk old-school things, and use his first habnd expiriance when calling matches. Lastly, he actually puts people over pretty well.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - JBL is AWESOME in the booth. Initially, I was expecting him to drag the character in there with him, but he's doing a bang-up job in there.

I some point, isn't the plan for JBL to return to in-ring wrestling again? If or when this happens I really can't think who else could do a sufficent job, what with Tazz now on ECW. The only reasonable guy to take over would be Todd Grisham, although I fear its more than likely going to be Josh Matthews.

Yeah, he's great. He puts people over, no matter who they are, is funny, and throws in old-school references too.

didn't see him last night as LA's UPN was showing Apollo 13 for some reason. But all the other times I've seen him on commentary he's been annoying as hell and undeserving of the commenter's chair. Maybe last night he did a better job

I think I heard his back is so bad that he has officially retired. He's obviously not hurting for money, so why risk ending up in a wheelchair? He's so great on commentary.
"Was Haku fictional? Was Harley Race fictional? Was Bret Hart fictional? Actually, he was in his own mind, nevermind that"
"Why were you never the King?" "I was never in it!" "Yes you were!!!" (quiet) "Yeah, once. I lost to Jake Roberts"

Even as an announcer, JBL is still the MVP of Smackdown. That's pretty sad.

SmackDown! has been way, way, WAAAAY better than RAW in the announcing department for years now. It's amazing and sad at the same time how played out, lame and uninspired the duo of JR and Lawler has become. This coming from a man who thinks JR and Solie are the best announcers of all time.

Smackdown annoucing was subpar when they had Tazz. TY! I thought the three man team of Coach, King and Styles wasn't bad at all. Coach was a lot better than people gave him credit for just because they didn't like the man. Tazz/Cole were NEVER better that JR/King. Cole has been wrong on his wrestling knowledge so many times I wonder if it's not just a work to make us all forget. Tazz got increasingly better over the years but was still never better than JR. He got to Lawler level though. I still don't get the JBL praise. Ever since he's been on commentary he's gone for joke after joke when he doesn't have to be funny all the time. Even Heenan knew that. Most of his jokes fall flat as he trips on his own tounge and I swear he yells at near Don West levels. Maybe Friday was better. I dunno. LA's UPN/MYNetwork station didn't show it. But, I seriously doubt he got to "MVP" levels in 7 days. As annoying as King became with the puppies thing, I never had to turn the sound off cause he was so grating. And this is a guy who watches and listens to Lucha Libre for 3 hours every week not knowing a word they say

From what I've heard, he's sort of like a modern Jesse Ventura.
You know, a heel, but not silly about it - he doesn't ALWAYS root for the heel, plus he has a ton of practical wrestling knowledge from ahving been around forever.
