OK, first off, if there's a dress code violation, it's not the hats, it's the shorts. Shorts are generally not considered acceptable in business casual, slacks are.
That being said... if push came to shove, I'd ask my shift manager if it's worth enforcing the rule given they are vets and there's bound to be a backlash if we do object. I suspect the rule would be waived because it's a very minor violation, given the bad press we'd get the other way.

I ate at a Wolfgang Puck restaurant once. It sucked and was also ridiculously overpriced. Whoever denied them serviced did those veterans a favor.

I was set to be super pissed, because disrespect to veterans really has that affect on me. While I do think the guys should have been seated, it was apparently not a big deal to them but to their families. Then they received an apology, a bottle of scotch and an invite back. So I can't be pissed. It's just one of those things.

I think the restaurant was in the right enforcing the rules they had set up. I mean, do these guys get to disobey any rule just because they're ww2 veterans? I think lecturing the hostess makes these guys seem like jerks. I have respect for men who put their lives on the line during that time period, but I think it would actually go against what they fought for.

Just because they were world war 2 veterans could break the rules of a restaurant?
C'mon, those soldiers deserve all the respect for serving their country in such an important war like the WWII was, but fight there doesn't mean that you can go just there and defy the rules of a restaurant, or any other established site.
I'm sorry, I can't see any justification to side with the veterans in this case, I think that they look like jerks, it's so hard to go with pants instead of shorts?

It's not like we're talking criminal law here. It's a dress code, which I always tend to find to be bullshit anyway. I think the restaurant kind of looked like jerks until they made things right. It's so hard to cut one break to some guys in their 90s who served not only their country but the entire world?

Dress code is a dress code I suppose. Not that I agree with it. If I owned a pub and if they paid hard cash they could come in an have a beer. But I'm not a business guy, some places have dress codes.

Dress code are BS most of the time and it is a tiny thing to get upset over, but why does entitle them to act like jerks? Did they really have to start ranting to the Hostess about fighting for freedom? This isn't exactly something relating to ww2. They fought in a war against fascism and imperialism, so it seems quite hypocritical to act like they are above the rules. It really reminds me of a parent telling their kid "too bad, I gave life to you so it's okay to treat you like crap."

Sorry, doing better than T Shirts and Shorts in a fine dining establishment is pretty mandatory.

Actually, if you read the article, you'll see that the vets didn't act like jerks or rant to anyone. It clearly states the guys returned to the bus laughing and joking about "still causing trouble." The daughter of one of them spoke to the hostess. It also doesn't say anything about ranting. I don't really find it hypocritical at all, considering the daughter was basically reminding the woman of this out of hope of getting a little respect for her father and his fellow vets, which I have no problem with. Besides, would they have said anything if Brad Pitt, 50 Cent, or Peyton Manning came in wearing shorts? I highly doubt it. I'm more inclined to let a vet by on something as simple and stupid as a dress code than I am some celebrity.

The daughter sounds like a jerk to me. Acting like the hostess didn't know anything about WW2 and was too young to know anything about it? How elitist can you F'ing get?

I will admit I briefly skimmed the article before,(read the whole thing now) but this makes the daughter look like a jerk. Getting respect for them? They were disrespected because the restaurant followed it's own rules? I don't know if the place would have bended it rules if a pompous over paid celebrity came in, but I think whether it's overrated rappers or veterans, everybody should be treated equal.

The one vets daughter sounds like a twit. At least the vets took it in good humor, but who is the daughter to lecture the hostess on how to do her job? “She was doing her job, she was professionally dressed and she was not being obnoxious. She was trained well, but this was not an empowered young woman. I’m not sure it ever occurred to her to say, ‘Let me go talk to my manager.’ She's not an empowered young woman? Because she did her job and was doing it how she was trained and because she didn't run to a higher authority in the back? She did as she was trained to do...and she's not an empowered woman because she didn't run off to ask permission? Does this woman even know what it means to be empowered? She had the ability to enforce the restaurant rules without her manager having to hold her hand, that sounds pretty damn empowered to me. What's even more embarrassing is the company management throwing this hostess under the bus. If she would have asked the manager if it was ok to seat them, then they'd have been seated? I call BS on that one. The only reason they even caved in and sent the vets anything at all is because someone *cough*thedaughter*cough* went crying and whining to the press about how these vets were denied service...because they weren't properly dressed!!! It had nothing to do with them being vets, c'mon! Even the mayor of Dallas is getting in on the butt kiss parade...it's ridiculous. My grandfather is a proud World War 2 vet and neither he nor any of the rest of us (his family) have ever used the excuse of him being a WW2 vet to complain about anything. Ok, he's an old man...he complains, but he's never demanded special privileges because of being a vet.

When are we as a society going to grow up, move on, and realize all this bulls*** doesn't matter? Stop freaking out because someones not wearing a button down shirt, or isn't wearing a tie, or whatever crap people "decided" looks good...

People want there to be an "elite" society, so they can be part of it, and feel like they're better than the people that aren't.
