I don't get why they keep bringing up the men's record. Its two different leagues. Its like bringing up Cal Ripken's iron man record to the football one. They're both NCAA Division I. That's all that really matters when it comes to the record books. The rules are slightly different though. Balls are different, the shot-clock is different, 3 point distance is different. They may seem like minor rule differences, and they are, but if the play isn't the same, then the rules should be distinct. It'd be like Indy Car records applying in NASCAR.

The streak may be impressive, yes, but women's college basketball is woefully lopsided, and most of the teams that UConn had defeated in this streak wouldn't even be able to compete against even a men's team from the SWAC (I know, unfair comparison, but you have to understand). It's just more or less what happens when you get everyone from a very shallow talent pool on one team. None of the teams they've beaten would be able to compete with ANY Division 1 mens team...and you can include UConn themselves in that. That's definitely true. If you want a good competition comparison element, a pretty good Freshmen boys high school basketball team is a good matchup for a pretty good college women's team. Nope, not being a jerk to say that. It's just the way it is. One of the scrimmages we had Freshmen year was against a Top 10 nationally ranked college team (not a Division I team) and we were by and large much better, though we didn't exactly run up the score. Both teams (theirs and ours) benefited from the contest though. Our Varsity high school team would have made it way way out-of-balance, and I'm overly sure that our high school team is able/would have been able to defeat Division I women's programs fairly convincingly.

Doesn't help that even an all freshmen team of high school guys would be, more than likely, taller than most college female basketball players. And I try my hardest not to hate on women's basketball, but good lord, that sport just makes it too damn easy to rip on them. To put it another way, women's basketball, on all levels from high school all the way to the WNBA, is to men's basketball as Gobots are to Transformers.

All right, they broke the record. Now can we stop talking about them? Seriously, the fact that they won by an average of like 30 points shows that the parity among women's basketball teams isn't there compared to men's basketball. In men's basketball, a #12 team is a threat to the #1 team. In women's basketball, once you get past the top 5, the quality of competition goes off the cliff. 89 is a lot of wins, but Wooden's 88 is still better in my book.

Good for them, but I really don't have any interest.

Is it impressive? Not really. It just means they don't play anyone that can even match up to them at all. So essentially it isn't impressive because they are better than everyone else? Or course it is impressive, just because they would get beaten by any mens' team does not factor into it. Wooden's teams would have gotten destroyed by NBA teams, it doesn't make his record any less impressive. But no, I do not really care.

I guess one thing Title IX has shown us is their accomplishments are just as good as the men.

The only time I care about women's sports is during the Summer and Winter Olympics. Other than that I don't give a crap. This UConn streak is pretty fraudulent to me. It's like the same thing when Pat Summitt got the wins record.

Damn,I guess I'm the only one who likes to watch women sports teams. No you're not. The UConn women are just as good, if not better than the UConn men's team, IMO And I honestly have to say that most posters in this thread are proving Auriemma's point.

they're separate though....there's a men's league and there's a women's league......they don't play each other
an really.....you wouldn't be more impressed with a duke, kentucky, or whoever winning 90 straight games?

The fact that everyone that watches women's basketball goes crazy when one woman out of hundreds is able to dunk is probably a good example of how exciting the games are....

If I can step in here: The main reason that UCLA's 88 win streak is more impressive than UConn's current streak is that UCLA were playing against stronger opponents. The situation in women's basketball today is that there's about 4-5 really good teams (UConn, Tennessee, Stanford, and possibly Baylor and Maryland) and the rest almost could be interchangeable with one another. See for instance this entire season so far for them: they have only been challenged ONCE, against Baylor, where they barely won. Every other contest has been between a blowout and a royal whooping (avg. margin of victory: 37.18 points with Baylor, 40.8 without). I could say more, but I am tired right now.
