Let's face it, the Christmas Number One was always the biggest selling song of the year. That's it. It's not like winning an award or headlining a major event, it's recognition that people have brought your single the most in the year. Out of the last 30 years, the Christmas #1 has been the best selling single only six times.

At least X-Factor was a NEW single that was out at the time. It was a cover version of a Miley Cyrus song that wasn't even a year old yet. The other option was a cover of Don't Stop Believing with the original being the pick for the "protest number 1" before it became TheClimb/KITNO. imho, I was ok with it last year due to how stupidly biased the show was in pushing Joe down everyones throats when there were around 3 to 5 better choices. I don't even think he was the most talented in his category never mind the whole show... This year, I really don't care. Didn't even give it my time of day. The one time where I did catch a show, I realised that they somehow managed to find two people more of a joke act then Jedward....... and then they acted liked one of them was the best act of the night. I've lost all faith in that show finding anyone with talent anymore as they're too busy being SHOCKING for the ratings now...

4'33 is the kind of thing that pretentious douchebags salivate over. I could do the exact same thing. It's just an example of what I call blank canvas performance. Someone does something incredibly basic and uneventful, then people just read whatever they want in to it and proclaim it to be magnificent.

I said it last year and I've said it this year... Why not get behind a young, up and coming artist who would actually benefit from the exposure?
Or, as has been said, go for an actual Christmas song, Fairytale Of New York would be my choice!

Doing this again just seems pointless.
Last year, fair enough, a lot of people thought 'ok, we're fed up with this shit' and it just happened.
Then this year, there wer people talking, debating which song it should be, making it just as calculated as a record company's christmas choice.
Anyway, if they were going to do it, I'd have picked a christmas song too, this one:

Okay several people have responded so I'll respond to several people.
1. I know that the Christmas Number One isn't anything THAT special, but Christmas is my favourite time of year and it means something to me. I don't care about it being something daft like Bob The Builder, because at least that's the time. 2. I think you guys were missing what I meant by a 'new' song. Who cares if the X-Factor song was a cover? A cover is still a new recording at least, a single released in the month before Christmas with the aim of getting to number one.

I think a lot of people (including me) just have a problem with music (or anti music) juganaut that is X-Factor. X-Factor, Pop Idol, whatever seems to have a grip on the Christmas number 1 making it impossible for anybody else to compete (Until Rage last year that is)
Everyone loves the under dog which is why anything other than X-Factor winner's single being Christmas Number 1 in the U.K. would be celebrated by many.
Personally it shouldn't matter, music is more than who will get top spot in one week in December. Music is about listening to albums and singles you love and discovering new bands that blow you away. Not watching X-Factor on a Saturday night.

Is the guy from the GoCompare adverts not meant to releasing a song?
If so, I would buy the X-Factor CD a million times over to stop that getting to number one.

Why does everything need to be linked to Facebook now? I don't want my face to randomly pop up on the '40,000 people liked this' thing. I'm all for keeping the X-factor or whatever down but god dammit I'm just not a facebook guy.

So that is the single most pretentious thing of all time. This is what happens when a bunch of douches try to out douche each other. You get a performance that consists of total silence, and a bunch of ass hats acting like it's deep and artistic because they are too afraid to call shannanigans on it.

Well, Matt Cardle got the Christmas #1. I only listened to the Top 10 but 4'33" wasn't in there. Surfin' Bird got #3 and Rihanna got #2.
The original version of Cardle's song re-entered at #9.

The 4'3" only managed number 19 or something. Thankfully.
If Matt Cardle couldn't sing, or it was a poor song, I'd understand the backlash, but he can sing, and it's a decent cover.

It's probably one of my least favourite Biffy songs anyway so doesn't bother me that much. Now if he was to cover 'There's No Such Thing As A Jaggy Snake' or 'Semi Mental' Id be more interested.

Remember last year, when Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name" beat out Joe McElderry's "The Climb" for Christmas No. 1? Well, it's that time of the year again: catm.co.uk/Here's a performance of 4'33'': It's still better than anything Mary, Matt, Rebecca, Cher, or One Dimension would do. So sign up and Cage Against the Machine! It originally composed by Phillip Glass, people who are critics of Glass say it's his best work.

Booooo. I came in here to see or hear about Johnny Cage decapitations and signing autographs for people. I am disappointed.

I'm a fan of 4'33"
You can just imagine the atmosphere of seeing it live in a room full of hundreds of people all being bought together and every one of those people being completely silent, how often does that happen? It's just a scenario that mesmerizes me, and picking up all the accidental sounds made from the hundreds of people can be really interesting to hear in such a huge live space. I'm a big fan of atmospheric music, and it's just my interpretation that this piece can be put into that category.
