With The Undertaker and Christian injured and Matt Hardy and MVP recently released, Smackdown has taken quite a hit in terms of roster depth. I may be off here, but I imagine the totem pole (so to speak) looking something like this:
Main Eventers: (3 faces/1 heel) The Big Show Edge Kane Rey Mysterio
Upper Mid-Carders: (1 face/5 heels) Alberto Del Rio "Dashing" Cody Rhodes Dolph Ziggler Drew McIntyre Jack Swagger Kofi Kingston
Lower Mid-Carders: (2 faces/1 heel) Chris Masters Kaval Tyler Reks
Comedy/Jobbers: (2 faces/2 heels) Chavo Guerrero Curt Hawkins JTG Trent Barreta (Joseph Mercury would be listed here as well if he weren't injured)
That's a roster of only 17 men with 8 of them being faces and 9 heels. Do you think this is enough to carry Smackdown? if not, what would you do? Move anyone over from RAW? Promote anyone from FCW not involved in NXT Season 4? Use Finlay again? Call up Percy Watson? Place an emphasis on the women's division? Move anyone's position up or down? Turn anyone in particular heel or face? If you were in charge of creative, how would you address this problem? Would you even consider it a problem?

A few things/restructuring
- 17 "Usable" superstars is slim pickins, but herein lies the oppertunity. Keep the 4 Main Eventers, maybe elevate Del Rio and finally pull the trigger on Kofi if the title picture sarts looking too stale. Aside from that, use the thin roster to re-build the lower card.
- Give EVERYONE a reason to compete, with only 17 people on the Male Roster (and seriously.....only 10 that WWE care about). there's no reason why each and every one of them can't be featured in some form or fashion in a 2 hour show.

Swagger, Del Rio, and maybe Ziggler should be moved into the main event. Would help balance the face/heel ratio.
Move Kaval, Reks, and Masters in the midcard to fill the void left by the others.
Move some Raw guys to Smackdown to help fill out the rest of the roster. Goldust, Yoshi, DH Smith, Tyson Kidd, and Zack Ryder would be good choices IMO. None of them are doing anything on RAW, and would maybe have more room to shine on Smackdown.

I think both ADR and Kofi would work as main events, especially when matched against the current main eventers.
A healthy CM Punk would greatly enhance the roster. And moving Morrison from Raw would flesh out the midcard nicely.

17 wrestlers... and only two actual angles, Edge/Kane and Mysterio/Del Rio (the later of which seems to be degenerating into another "They fight every week without any sense of forward momentum" thing, like most Smackdown angles of the year).
It isn't the roster itself, it's the way they're being used. Smackdown is godawful at the moment; virtually every one of these guys is decomposing into a pile of apathy before our eyes.

I personally love the Smackdown roster. I mark extremely hard for Del Rio, Ziggler, Swagger, Rhodes, Kaval, and Barreta. The upper midcard is definitely where the talent is. Kofi and even Drew (face ) are great too, just not my favorites. Edge is okay, I just can't stand him as a face but I'll include him. So personally, there are 9 people who I'd like to watch on Smackdown. Kane isn't my favorite in the ring, but I'll include him too. And despite how I feel about them, Rey and Big Show draw and are solid main eventers. The problem is the roles they play. When your roster is so small, do you really have to keep perfectly usable talent like Trent and Hawkins on Superstars and NEVER show them on Smackdown? You could give them a ten minute match if you cut down half of the Edge/Bearer bull****. The main event needs Del Rio and Swagger, and Kaval and Masters should be solid midcarders along with Barreta and Hawkins. I'd also like Morrison on SD just because I want him to win the world title and have it alongside Miz. And maybe there he could be in the main event, although it would make the ME have too many faces. Edge turning heel and feuding with Morrison for the title would be great, or even better, heel Morrison vs face Edge. (I despise face Edge but I'd tolerate it if it meant heel Morrison)

I think Del Rio is ready to enter the main event picture
as is Swagger, however, he really needs to be built up more before he can be taken seriously as a main event guy
additionally, they need to start building Kaval as something more then a jobber

Would help the upper card face heel ratio if someone turned and they moved someone up to upper mid card thou with Kaval possibly feuding with Ziggler there's something there. But between Ziggler McIntyre Swagger and Rhodes who the hell can turn?

No tag teams, half their jobbers got released last week, MVP & Matt got released, Christian is injured, and Taker is gone
Oh and Finlay decided to make one appearance per year.
Compared to RAW, SD would get murdered in any match right now.

Turn Swagger face, promote Kaval, JTG and Masters a little bit more.
That's what I'd do.

The roster is fine, but I'd probably reactivate Finlay, elevate Masters, and maybe move Evan Bourne over.
Oh, and replace Hayes; it really doesn't matter what you do as long as he's booking.

Raw's pretty full with all the NXT guys. I'd add 3 to bring it to an even 20. Since the Hart Dynasty is split up, I'd move one of them there. Maybe the Usos too. Elevate Del Rio, Kofi and Chris Masters to main event.

Kofi needs to move up the card. Kane's only defended the title against old established guys who have already done it all. If he beats Edge, I say give Kofi the shot at Royal Rumble. The guy is extremely likable and over, I really don't know why they wouldn't at the very least give him an opportunity when there are so few options. Before the "STUPID STUPID" incident, he seemed to fit the upper-card role extremely well.

I'd rather have a small roster like this, where I like most of the stars, than an overly bloated roster with a load of guys I don't like just taking up space.
