Won't be popular to say but if it wasn't for Barney, there's no way How I Met Your Mother would've taken off. A serving of this, please.

He's very much the most needed character type of the show. Well, to me, the show is more about the core ensemble of five than about any one actor. I think if you lose any of them, you lose the shows appeal. But Barney is easily the breakout character, so I guess there's a ton of weight to the argument.

I think it's definitely the dynamic of it, but Barney's character is sort of necessary to make it work. You have a guy who wants to be married, two people who are married and a girl who wants a relationship but doesn't want to be married. A show based around that really needs the playboy character to lighten it up. I think if you got rid of one of the other characters, it could still be interesting. If you got rid of him, it wouldn't be. Without him, it'd be like Cheers without Norm.

Mucha Lucha would have been unwatchable without The Flea.

Classics heresy here, but Andy Griffith Show would have sucked (at least as far as being a comedy) without Barney Fife, and Happy Days would have been close behind without Fonzie.

"The Dukes of Hazzard" and Boss Hogg. Nah, it had two great characters, Rosco being the other.

"The Dukes of Hazzard" and Boss Hogg. Nah, it had two great characters, Rosco being the other. Fair enough. Though I disagree with your statement about "Andy Griffith". Barney Fife was the best character, but I think Andy himself was good, and Opie was one of the few sitcom kids who actually acted like a kid, so I enjoyed him. Plus Floyd, Otis, and Aunt Bee had their moments. Back on topic: "Family Ties" never would have lasted without Alex Keaton.

The hot chick on Big Bang Theory. And when I say "great character" I mean she's hot.

Won't be popular to say but if it wasn't for Barney, there's no way How I Met Your Mother would've taken off. He didn't ask "Good shows made even better by one character." He asked about Bad shows elevated. If you think How I Met Your Mother is a bad show, and Barney makes it better, well, I just don't know what to say to you.

I think if you removed Barney completely from the equation, and had no stand in, it'd be a really lackluster show. He's not the entire focus of the show, no, but I don't think the other characters would be able to carry it.

I thoroughly enjoy How I Met Your Mother, I really do but come on. First of all, you could remove Ted completely and other than the guise of the "how I met your mother" story, the show wouldn't miss a beat. Marshall and Lily are interesting in a window dressing kind of way but no one watches the show BECAUSE of them. They have their comedic moments but certainly couldn't carry a series. Robin falls into a similar role except she's a little more diverse with her Robin Sparkles backstory. She has a lot of potential to be interesting, at least more so than the rest. Then we have Barney. He is, in my estimation, the sole reason the show took off in the first place. It would've been just another "somewhat eccentrics living in New York navigate the rocky seas of love" type of shows without him.

Regardless of how you feel about it, the writing of that show is the crown jewel. Barney is a great character, yes, but he's written that way. NPH has little to do with it at this point. That is not a 'bad show' saved by a great character. It's an excellently written and GOOD show, as proven by the fact that all the characters (save Ted, really) are good. It's really not even up for discussion. How I Met Your Mother is NOT what this thread is about.
