He was just supposed to be some one time character. The show was called "Family Matters." He wasn't part of their family and he became the star of the show. The creators had not expected it as they didn't even have anybody playing his parents. You never saw his parents and they were only mentioned in script which was a way to keep some focus on the Winslow's.

I thoroughly enjoy How I Met Your Mother, I really do but come on. First of all, you could remove Ted completely and other than the guise of the "how I met your mother" story, the show wouldn't miss a beat. Marshall and Lily are interesting in a window dressing kind of way but no one watches the show BECAUSE of them. They have their comedic moments but certainly couldn't carry a series. Robin falls into a similar role except she's a little more diverse with her Robin Sparkles backstory. She has a lot of potential to be interesting, at least more so than the rest. Then we have Barney. He is, in my estimation, the sole reason the show took off in the first place. It would've been just another "somewhat eccentrics living in New York navigate the rocky seas of love" type of shows without him. Regardless of how you feel about it, the writing of that show is the crown jewel. Barney is a great character, yes, but he's written that way. NPH has little to do with it at this point. That is not a 'bad show' saved by a great character. It's an excellently written and GOOD show, as proven by the fact that all the characters (save Ted, really) are good. It's really not even up for discussion. How I Met Your Mother is NOT what this thread is about. Oh ok. Let me know when it's up for discussion then so we can talk about it. I didn't realize that it wasn't on today's agenda.

I don't think anyone would have noticed Family Matters if it weren't for Steve Urkel. This. As much as people hate on Urkel, he was a great character during his early run. Besides, what else did the show really have going for it? Carl Winsow was basically just a Jackie Gleason impression and the rest was rather mediocre sitcom fare.

Won't be popular to say but if it wasn't for Barney, there's no way How I Met Your Mother would've taken off. Definitely. And The Big Bang Theory and Sheldon Cooper. I think Big Bang Theory is a much better show. Sure Sheldon really makes it that much better but I still think it would have been good without Sheldon being so weird.

Not maybe a bad show per se, but I am only interested in 30 Rock because of Alec Baldwin's character, and comic delivery.

Also, while Martin Lawrence is a funny guy (with the exception of almost all his movies), I don't think his show would have nearly been as funny without Pam to be his true foil. Without her, he just has a Lucy-type wife and some dumb friends to work with.
