Why in the world was Roddy Piper painted half black? Given that he was wrestling Bad News Brown I fear the answer may be insanely racist.

It was a weird head games thing. Bad News was trashing white people, so Piper painted himself half-black to... um, OK, I honestly don't know why.
Hilariously, Piper had a hard time washing the stuff off afterwards.

I think there were a multitude of reasons....all of which can be linked to "Sometimes Roddy Piper was a nutbar"

I honestly don't think he was *trying* to make a racist statement. He was trying to be the everyman who could represent both races, and it failed horribly.

Pretty sure it was Andre who gave him the solution to paint himself half black, told him it would wash off easily...but lied. Piper walked around half black for like a week.
It would be cool if he wore like a half afro wig

Am I remembering correctly that during his promo he would talk for a while with his normal side towards the camera and then turn and talk with his black side towards the camera?
Did that happen or have I lost it?

Did that happen or have I lost it? Yes. Fink was interviewing him before the match and his "White side" was facing the camera and then he turned and you saw the other half of him.

It's Roddy Piper...the man was tremendously over and always entertaining.
Yet he's never held a World Title anywhere.
Further proof titles aren't important if you are good enough to begin with.

Pretty sure it was Andre who gave him the solution to paint himself half black, told him it would wash off easily...but lied. Piper walked around half black for like a week. It would be cool if he wore like a half afro wig Vince got the body paint, a new/different kind to the one normally used that wouldn't sweat off, so Piper could keep it on for the whole match. To remove it, it required a special solution. Enter Andre and Arnold Skaaland. They poured the solution away and filled the can with water. Piper then scrubbed both at the arena and at the hotel until he was raw, but it wouldn't shift. He couldn't seek any revenge, because it was Andre and who tries revenge on a giant? Piper tells a great story about flying home. He had a huge Pepe Le Pew (I think) cuddly toy for his daughter. Not wanting it to go in with the luggage, he had to buy a seat for it. Imagine for a second what that looked like. A half black/half white man asking for a seat for a giant skunk. It took him 3 weeks of daily visits to saunas and steam rooms to shift it. This was all the while trying turpentine etc at home in Portland.

I also liked his statement that when he would do the awkward 'disco dance' thing that he was trying to be 'Michael Jackson'; when it again, looked more Tony Manero.
But as has been mentioned, it was him trying to say " It doesn't matter if you're black or white" in the ill advised move of blackface.

It should also be noted that their match began after the two got into a scuffle at the Royal Rumble some three months earlier. Compare that to today, when a spat from a Rumble elimination involving midcards just leads to a match on Raw one or two weeks later.

In Bad News Brown's shoot interview tape years ago, he said Piper did it because he was a big racist.

That might have something to do with the fact they ddnt have PPVs seemingly every 3 weeks
