I don't understand why pedophiles are subject to so much more vitriol than say, murderers and serial killers, especially if the rape in question is statutory in nature.
I don't mean to say that punishment should be lenient either. You just don't get the same GETTHESONOFABITCH reaction with some objectively worse crimes.

I can't stand the show. It's just made the police's job that much harder to bust the really dangerous pervs because they're all too paranoid now that Chris Hansen is going to pop out of the bushes. Dateline NBC could care less though, they're only in it for the ratings.

I, nor anyone else, can change how a person feels about certain things, unless they go through extreme cognitive behavioural therapy, and even that doesn't help. So, if they're just, existing, and not grabbing some kid, that's fine. It did help with deterrence, and there are still those predators out there, and go about things doing different methods. But now, they maybe a lot more paranoid to go out and solicite children online, because good o'l Chris Hanson will ask them to take a seat.

Exactly, I thought part of law enforcements job is to help DETER crime too, if this helps to do that, then it's doing a good job.

I doubt it is deterring anything...only making them harder to catch.

It's just making them be a lot more careful on how they approach it. I can guarantee you right now that if Dateline NBC never started the specials and the police just did the stings on their own, there would be a lot more scumbags behind bars right now. I've never read any of the online logs from the pervs or even watched the show, but it seems to me they from the way the show is described to me that they go out of their way to showcase the wackiest of the pervs for ratings sakes. Screw ratings. I'm not defending the pervs. They're sick for even trying to really meet a child for sex and deserve all of the embarrassment and the jailtime they get. I just feel that there's going to be that one dangerous perv that would have been caught by the police who won't get caught now until the damage has been done.

How do you be more careful by obviously going to meet a child for sex? It's not like the child should be able to go and drive to the nearest bar or something to meet a sick pervert.

I was somewhat iffy about the idea of deterrence, mainly because it seems to be a bad excuse with different types of punishment. But, with this, you're being exposed to everyone, and as said above, people have more hatred for child predators then murderers, theives, drug users, etc. A person can say, yeah, I was on drugs, but now I'm over that, and be fine. But you say, yeah, I tried to molest a 13 year old, but now I'm fine, it's harder to look at them the same I guess. And the public name and shame is something that people can think about, especially since it's not a split decision issue, it can be a long drawn out process.
As in making it harder to catch the criminals, in what way exactly? It's easy to accept the fact that they are out there, but when there is a possibility to be exposed on national television, people maybe a tad weary. Unless they're stalking them at certain schools or whatever, I don't think this show would have any positive or negative effect on that, just merely online instances.
They do showcase the odd ones, no question, but likely due to the "holy shit" factor. However, everyone who is caught is shown. Plus those can be shown as extreme examples, as you have all different types of people from all different walks of life, including registered sex offenders, and knowing that they are in the area is a good way to figure out how and what to do in that situation, as they do reoffend at times.

How about instead of meeting someone from the internet, they instead head to the local mall, beach, pool, amusement park, etc...

I like the fact that they nail these bastards but unfortunately more people have more to worry about when it comes to family members rather than strangers.

i've seen a few of them but i have a difficult time watching stuff with pedophiles (movies, tv shows etc) as it's one of the legit things that makes me physically ill, BUT i will say from the few i've seen i would like to know when the memo went out that if you're going to go f*** a little boy or girl that you must bring Wine Coolers.
the closest thing you can get to Kool-Aid in alcohol form is just beyond f***ing creepy to me.

I love how these guys are so hyped and excited when they go to the decoy house and how fast their demeanor changes when they see Chris Hanson. They drive for hours and hours to meet these "kids" and are so focused on scoring with them, only to get there and ultimately ruin their own lives. And for ALL of them, they always say it was their first time or that they were just coming over to see their friend.

The show is interesting as all hell, but I do get a bit uncomfortable watching it sometimes.
