When he first step foot in the WWF scene in 1998, he had an immediate aura to him. His unique entrance where he emerged from a ring of fire, spitting out a red substance from a couldron, and a colorful gimmick(he was a vampire). He immediately began a feud with the debuting Edge, and then they later teamed together, and recruited Christian forming The Brood.
The stable had a cult following and were known for their blood baths they gave their victims. Ironically enough, Gangrel(the leader of the group) had no real success to follow up on, while his goons, Edge & Christian found success in the tag team and later single ranks, and for Edge, a multiple time World champion.
Although he wasn't much of a wrestler, what really killed his push IMO is his lack of ability to speak. Check out his first interview on youtube, and you'll see what I mean. You'd expect a sinister voice coming from him, but he sounded like a surfer. Hell, Edge, who's mic skills wasn't honed at that time did a better(not good) job on the mic then his protege. It really killed his mystique.
That being said, how far do you think The Gothic Warrior could've gone? I wouldn't have minded giving him the European Championship(Royal Rumble 99 would've been a good time) and maybe IC champion, and maybe if over time, he could've evolved out of that gimmick like Edge and Christian did, but as far as WWF champion, especially in the Attitude Era goes? Not very likely. But really, I think his in-ring ability and mic skills held him back, and if he worked on those, he could've lasted longer.
What do you think?

Depends, how long did WWE want to keep paying White Wolf Games?

Personally, I think he could have gone far. I liked The Brood, the whole Gothic Vampire stable really got people interested. I think what killed Gangrel's chances was weight issues. He was told by management a lot to lose weight, but he didn't. He was released sometime in 2000. Sure he made some return on Smackdown with Viscera as hired grunts by JBL and was rumored to be part of a Vampire Stable with Thorn and Ariel, but he couldn't lose the weight.

oh god. He wasn't even that fat. Plus he had that shirt that covered it anyways. He looked awesome and he was a pretty decent worker. He came up with the impaler. Pretty awesome finisher.
he had a great aura, one of the best entrances ever. Yea the missed the boat there

Honestly I could never take the whole vampire gimmick seriously.
Awesome theme music though.

That gimmick was great and the whole entrance was cool too. I don't think he could have been main event, but definitely mid-card.

At the time, he clearly could have had an IC title reign

Definitely IC champ. He was really over, his entrance AND ring work were great....I'd still like to see him again, he's not THAT old...

I loved the gimmick, but going back over footage of him, I noticed his mic skills were pretty bad. He barely talked, and when he did, it was Warrior-style ramblings about darkness and evil.

I liked him and thought he had somewhat of a future.
He at least should of gotten the IC title.
WWE was ahead of the times with that vampire crap.

A good example of an excellent gimmick being slapped on someone who wasn't able to take it.

He came up with the impaler. Pretty awesome finisher. It was a great finisher but he didn't invent it. Johnny Ace used it and called it the Johnny Spike.

Gangrel had a good entrance and pulled off a decent look and demeanor.
...but his wrestling and talking were really sub par.
There wasn't really anything else to be done with him than what we got.

To be honest, he always seemed like the manager to Edge/Christian who would wrestle from time to time...nothing more, nothing less.

So...some people thought he was a great worker and others thought he was trash? How silly.
