After reading the "Least favorite Russoism" thread in the TNA board I got to thinking, Russo occasionally likes to do juvenile humor and obviously it doesn't have a big effect on the audience as much as it used to and it got me thinking: what does today's audiences want? WWE is starting to find its stride with the youth movement and PG oriented storytelling, but is that appropriate for today's crowd seeing as there is still a good quantity who still reject it and the PPV buys are going down?
In the 80's we had these huge larger than life characters who were looked upon as superheroes.
In the late 90's Attitude Era Gen X was grown up and wanted to see the anti-establishment, raunchy side of things.
So in your guys' perspectives, what does the wrestling audience want in the product today? I understand we can't really pinpoint what it is but take your best guess.

A realistic down-to-earth show... that's completely off the wall and swarming with magic robots.

Pay Per View buyrates have NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SHOW QUALITY.
It's the economics. 50 bucks for a pay per view, which most people can easily watch for free. Why would people shell out such an insane amount of money in times like these?

If society's any indication, a realistic, stream-lined, slick and polished yet "raw" (nopunintended) show.
Both TNA and WWE have certain aspects of this. So either a key ingredient is missing or the wrong demographic is being aimed at in at least one of those organizations.

Logical, well booked storylines.
PPV stipulations that matter.
A significant drop in PPV prices.

Wrestlers I can care about, interesting storylines that get me excited, real women's wrestling, no silly jokes but still some comedy, you know. The works.

The 80s and the Attitude Era were pretty juvenile in different ways. The 80s were cartoonish and over the top, while the Attitude era was a lot of dick and fart jokes disguised as "edgy." The "PG " era is actually a happy medium for me. The only thing that I really dislike is stupid kiddy stuff like Hornswoggle.

What do audiences what? Who knows? I don't think anyone does.
Good in-ring action? That doesn't seem to matter in a world where MMA exposes the business more than anything anyone named Vince ever did.
Storylines? Maybe, but in the world where people watch 3 minute clips on YouTube are promos, video clips and backstage drama really what people are looking for?
Midcard storylines? An effort with ladies in wrestling? Tag teams? Do any of those things really matter to the so-called casual fan?
Seriously, I don't think anyone knows.

Midcard storylines? An effort with ladies in wrestling? Tag teams? Do any of those things really matter to the so-called casual fan? I'm going to comment on this - strenthening these three areas creates a stronger overall show. You're more likely to attract a new fan with a show that's brimming with interesting characters with different specialties, as opposed to a show that has a small few main characters who are several times more important than the rest of the cast.

Yeah, but tag teams cost twice as much as one guy. (That's really the only thing I can come up with as reasoning for the lack of teams)

Wrestling just needs to be considered "cool" and mainstream again. Wrestling fans will watch no matter what (besides the occasional guy on a forum that throws a fit when they release a guy like Kaval)
When we talk about "golden ages" in wrestling we think of the 80's and Attitude era. The wrestling was not any better then, the storylines weren't any more creative, arenas were packed with marks, crowds were hot, and everyone benefited.
The crossover appeal of the Miz is probably one of the main reason's he's in the position he's in.

Why would people shell out such an insane amount of money in times like these? Than explain why UFC continues to do fantastic buyrates in comparison. If it was simply the economy at fault then nobody would be doing well.

A pony named Periwinkle.
Seriously the audience just want to be entertained. The question should be what do smarks want.
