Hogan. The only person close would be Andre.

If you asked non wrestling fans to name a wrestler, Hulk Hogan would be the most named. For that reason, I think you have to consider him the biggest wrestling superstars. There were others that did it first, there were others that made more money, there were others who had better success outside of wrestling, but to most people, Hogan is professional wrestling.

Yeah, it has to be Hogan. I think he will always be the first person the average person on the street thinks of when they think wrestling.
Go to any corner of the globe and I guarantee almost everyone will know the name Hulk Hogan. On the other hand, I think like 98% of non-wrestling fans would have no idea who Stone Cold Steve Austin is. Especially those outside of North America.

Also, I love him to death but Macho man does not belong on this list. Was he popular? yes, but nowhere near the levels of Austin, Rock, or hell even Cena in terms of mainstream appeal and marketability. That is completely untrue. Look at how every media outlet stopped when he died last May. At the time of the 80s boom, it was the most colorful/memorable and was around much more frequently than Hogan, making him easily a #2 of that era. Outside of that, his Slim Jims commercials are one of the most iconic sales pitches of the past 25 years. Countless tv viewers alive in that era who never watched a wrestling match in their life know who he is from that. Hogan is easily #1. But either Savage or The Rock, when taking into consideration all of their notoriety outside of wrestling, are either #2 or #3. Then Austin, Andre the Giant and Gorgeous George (who, in the 50s, was rivaled only by Milton Berle in terms of the biggest television star for the medium's first decade or so. I promise you every single one of your grandparents know who Gorgeous George is) in various orders fill up the rest.

I'm pretty sure Randy Savage is the only professional wrestler Time Magazine has even mentioned in the past decade.
(Not including ones who murdered their family and then killed themselves over the course of a weekend)

Love to vote for Austin but w/o Hogan there is no WWF brand. Ric Flair was wring Vince could not have done that with anybody. No trigger, no explosions. If Hogan dosnt make WWF in 85, than a lot is different in wrestling history. You mean if Piper didn't make Hogan... I'd say if anyone made Hogan, it's Sylvester Stallone.
