I still liked Maryse as a valet. They should have just put her with Miz who (obviously) she had chemistry with. WWE was going to put her with Miz, put it on hold because Maryse needed knee surgery, and by the time she returned, WWE thought Miz was doing just fine and didn't need a valet. Why WWE felt the need to put it on hold is something I can't answer as she could have just been his valet while injured. Kind of a personal gripe, but why only give people valets if they can't get over on their own? Someone who can't talk doesn't need a valet, they need a mouthpiece. Someone who needs purpose doesn't need a valet, they need a manager. To me, a valet isn't for something that isn't there, it's to enhance what already is (see also, Macho Man and Liz), and as a big fan of Ted Junior, I think it would have done more for the product as a whole to put Maryse with Miz and let magic happen than to try to use her to elevate Teddy. Then again, he would have probably been helped by not trying to make him a Million Dollar Redux, but that's another story.

Maryse was supposedly more concerned about getting herself over, hence one of the reasons why the DiBiase pairing failed.

I think we were getting this impression as viewers because she didn't seem to know how to tone down her persona to serve the wrestler while she was at ringside--but it may not have been her intent. WWE brass may have told her "OK you're working with Ted now. Go out there and do what you normally do." Without considering that what Maryse normally does is steal the show. They needed to show her old tapes of Sherri Martel or something, so she could see how you could still be a flamboyant, eye-catching and charismatic valet without actually upstaging your wrestler. She was a bit like Sable in that department, though I don't know if she was intentionally doing it or not--it's hard to say.

I disagree about the earlier statement that the crowd sat on their hand during the Michelle Vs Layla match at Xtreme Rules, that match started off slow but about the mid way through they started getting the crowd especially when layla hit the layout.
If there is any one current diva sans Kharma that can take kellys "overness" spot it is layla as a full fleged backed face , and with reports saying she is using a much more Lucha style would not surprise me that Layla does infact take the top face spot...and this will be even more so if it does come to fruition that she is paired with ryder.

Kelly Kelly's overness is one of those wrestling mysteries, where people talk about it like it's a fact yet there is hardly any evidence support it.
Kind of like how TNA's roster "blows WWE's out of the water".

Kind of like how TNA's roster "blows WWE's out of the water". Reactions and the fact that she made the Maxim Hot 100. I can recall Kelly Kelly getting pops before getting the title and being liked by the casual crowd. Not to mention the fact that she won that poll over Beth and Eve (and I don't want that whole "she was the only one who anyone had a reason to care about" stuff since Eve had more of that than Beth and still got destroyed in the poll). Hell, she was so popular that she helped Mason Ryan beat Sin Cara in a poll!

I guess it is like TNA roster being better, where at a time it may have been true, but it's not anymore. She gets as little reaction as anyone these days, Eve is the most over woman on the roster easily.
I don't get it. All she's got going for her is her looks, yet I see prettier women every day and I live in CLEVELAND.

Seniority, maybe. Isn't she currently the diva that's been with the WWE the longest?

I have a bad feeling that WWE will use Eve to try to get Kelly over with the crowd again. Despite that I want Eve to do something really evil apart from the things she has don e to Ryder to prove that she does not need Ryder to get over.

They've been trying to get Eve over for at least 2 years now. That's why they always give her random titles and insert her into storylines.

I could easily name several women in Detroit that are hotter than her, celebrity or otherwise.

Hell, the show "Hot in Cleveland" is named for that reason, these women come from LA and they're considered old and washed up, they land in Cleveland and they're suddenly hot again by the local standards! You know, since we're not shallow, superficial bastards and all.

But yet they never followed through on any of those. - She wins the Divas Title, they don't have her do much with it, she randomly drops it to Alicia. - They tease a storyline with Miz, and then forget about it a week later. - She wins the Divas Title from Natalya randomly, Cole rips into her, she goes after Cole, she drops the title to a Bella, and finally gets revenge on Cole after everyone's forgotten about what Cole had said about her. So far this has been the first storyline they've actually followed up on with her. And it started because Zack and Eve were tweeting each other weeks before they paired them up.

THANK YOU. The whole "Pretty girl but not much of a wrestler? Make her a valet!" thing annoys me. The Maryse example is a great one, too. Before she was paired with DiBiase, Bryan Alvarez and Lance Storm, among others, stated more than once how great and effective Maryse would be if WWE paired her with a male heel. This criticism of Maryse mystifies me. People rag on her association with DiBiase all the time as if they forget how ridiculously scripted WWE is. I'm just honestly not sure what could have done for him, in the current age of valets in WWE where the objective is to stand around and sometimes look displeased. It's not as if she had a lot of options. People say she should have toned it down which she could have done but I'm not sure how that would transfer to DiBiase getting over. At a certain point, you can't blame Maryse for being more interesting than him. It wasn't going to work out and, beyond that, they didn't really give them much to work with beyond the first two weeks.

From what I've read, WWE was not happy with Maryse because she was more concerned about making herself look more interesting, rather than helping DiBiase get over.

From what I've read, WWE was not happy with Maryse because she was more concerned about making herself look more interesting, rather than helping DiBiase get over. Right. I get that but how was she supposed to make him look interesting when she stood outside the ring and did roughly the same things any heel valet would do? She wasn't given a mic to talk about him, they weren't in segments together, and it wasn't too long before he went on a losing streak. She barely even interfered in his matches. They were not given much to do and unless they wanted her to go against the script, I'm incredulous as to how she could have gotten him over doing what she was told: nothing. There are a lot of arguments to take with this, but I think the classic still works - the writers give the talent nothing to do then they act surprised when it doesn't work out.

There isn't a person on Earth that could make Ted look interesting.
