You can't have Thanos without Warlock.
Mantis is also the Celestial Madonna, which would rank her as a bit of a heavyweight to be honest.

In theory yes, in practice though all I ever really saw her do in the Guardians book was some martial arts and some telepathy. Not exactly the planet-shatterer that some of the other are.

Warlock was drastically depowered to below Dr Strange levels of magic for GotG, so hardly planet shattering either.
And Phylla was trading dying with Moondragon so much, she wasn't exactly stacked either.

Not a chance.
That is just the origin of Major Victory, from the original Guardians, mashed up and given to Peter Quill for this film.

If one person decides in their head that's what they must be talking about, it's not a worthwhile rumor. It's just someone spouting crap.

The "Captain Marvel" naming rights thing is a hilariously complicated issue, but the long and short of it: Marvel's got the right to use the name now, and the character in question is Carol Danvers, who was formerly the superhero named Ms. Marvel.

I think it's Marvel can publish a title called Captain Marvel but DC could still call their Captain Marvel that but his titles have to be called something else and Shazam was used.

They recently just gave up and call him Shazam as his name now.

I haven't read comics in years. Can anyone explain how Adam Warlock got involved with the Guardians of the Galaxy? Last I heard, he was running around with the Infinity Watch. Also, is the Drax in that conceptual art supposed to be Drax the Destroyer? He looks smaller than I remember.

He was killed and brought back, when he was brought back, he got a redesign that essentially made him Riddick. Warlock was screwed over by the amount of people who died during a cosmic event called Annihilation, where billions and billions of people were wiped out by Annihillus invading from the Negative Zone with an army of bugs. He went in to a cocoon, like he usually does when he is dead, and when the cocoon opened, he was younger and depowered because he was opened early, by his old friend Moondragon. He then joins up, but soon goes mental and turns in to the Magus, and then gets killed, is brought back and then killed again. He's currently in a cocoon waiting for someone to write him again. The old Infinity Watch broke up ages ago when they lost the gems (to some crappy crossover, the gems are now on Earth being guarded by the Avengers) - no gems, no need for a Watch. Gamora, Adam and Pip stayed together until they didn't. Pip currently appears in X-Factor as a secretary, his role basically stolen by a bloody Raccoon.

So Groot got better after Hulk basically tore him to pieces ? Groot can reform himself from any remaining intact sprig. He's done so a few times since his return in Annihilation Conquest.

I'm sure this would all make sense if I continued reading comics over the past 17 years. But right now, it all sounds ridiculous. Sorry, but I'm a purist and prefer the original (and very basic) Marvel stories, which thankfully have been used for the movies.

In terms of why this GotG team exist, it is relatively simple. Annihillus, the old Fantastic Four villain finds a way through to the Marvel Universe, and invades it with a massive army of bugs. He conquers most all of Skrull space, most of Kree space, and the fringes of Shiar space. He also completely destroys the Nova corps, and with the help of Thanos, captures Galactus and the Silver Surfer. He is eventually beaten, and Galactus, who is very angry he was captured, wipes out most of his army and 3 entire star systems. The Kree, who are the first civilisation to get back on their feet build a a new network that is meant as an early warning system should anything like that happen again. Unfortunately, the Phalanx, now led by Ultron, takes over the defence system and uses it seal off Kree Space and broadcast techno-organic plague. Thankfully, Star Lord and this rag tag band of prisoners of war and various other people he meets come together and take down Ultron, with help from Nova, who is now the only Nova only, and so had a massive power upgrade (he also took out Annihillus in the previos cosmic conflict). With the Phalanx defeated, Star Lord, feeling guilty because he let them in, decides the best defence is a good offence and so asks the people he was working with to stay working with him, and voila, GotG born. If you wanted to read and catch up, the two key cross overs/events are: Annihilation: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annihilation_(comics)and Annihilation Conquest: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annihilation_ConquestI recommend both most high, as they are much, much better than the Earth events going on at the same time (Civil War and Secret Invasion)

I wouldn't bother with an origin story for the team, maybe something quick in flashbacks, but not a total retelling. Just show a day in the life of what they do best - get into situations out of their league yet somehow managing to save the universe in the process.

I guess they need some part of Star Lord showing, so you remember he's human. Is Drax missing a hand or did Liefeld draw this? It's just a bad angle, the hand's there, it just looks like it's not because of the angle. Also......they're really gonna put the goddamn raccoon and tree in this movie? Why? Raccoon=merch. Kids will eat that shit up. The tree...meh. LOTR did talking trees and people mostly bought it.
