Hogan's reign at the top lasted way longer than Austin's. He was undisputedly the biggest star in wrestling from 1984 until 1998. Granted 4 or 5 of those years were part of the down period, but it's still impressive. By comparison, Austin was only "the man" from 1998 to 2002, and he spent most of that period sharing the spotlight with The Rock.

Not only that, but Hogan revolutionized the business not once, but twice.

NYC, Florida, Toronto, Montreal, L.A.: Hogan would get a bigger pop. Texas (obviously), Chicago, St. Louis, Boston: Austin would get a bigger pop. If they're overseas, it's not even close.

It's Hogan, and anybody who wants to claim otherwise is trying to just escape the fact.
One could make the argument that Hogan never had a single year like Austin had in 1998, I guess, but even that's pushing it. Hulk Hogan made the WWF.

It's definitely Hogan. I would go as far to say that if you took a random survey of the general population by asking them to name 1 current WWE wrestler, a sizable chunk would say Hulk Hogan.

No one will ever be as big as Hogan because of segmentation.

Bigger than Rock, Cena, HHH, and Hart? Sure. Bigger than Hogan? No.

He's 2nd only to Hogan, there's no touching the Hulkster.
It's Hogan, then Austin, then Rock.
Cena's done a fantastic job carrying the company for as long as he has, but I don't think he'll ever reach that level, no matter how much WWE begs to differ.

I respectfully disagree. I'd say that in Boston Hogan would get a bigger pop. Fair enough, Austin would get a bigger pop in Philadelphia though. As a Philadelphian, I can safely say Hogan would easily out-pop Austin. The memories of Philadelphia fans are notoriously long. and Hogan sold out the Spectrum every two months for YEARS.

Austin drew more in a short time, but Hogan was on top longer. And Hogan has transcended wrestling.
But oddly enough, judging by my nieces and nephews -- most kids don't know who Hogan is. They only know of Cena and the current stars.

Hogan, by a mile. Say what you will about him, but he's still able to get mainstream publicity and recognition 25 years after he peaked. His reign as the top name in wrestling was so much longer than Austin or Rocks. Because of those factors, for the general public, Hulk Hogans name is still one of the few that non wrestling fans know.

No doubt it's Hogan, as much as I hate to say it.
But as far as I'm concerned, from the little shortlist of talent people always bring up for biggest star ever, Austin is the BEST. But then again, he's my favourite wrestler ever, so I may be biased.

Hogan. No knock against Austin. Whoever was going to be first was going to the biggest ever. That's what was always going to determine it...

Who cares about how many shirts people bought?
It's about who's meant more to the business, and who gets a bigger reaction now with the current product.
Austin was important to the WWE, and was hugely popular, but Hulk Hogan has been huge in the WWF, WCW, Hollywood, America, etc.
And I guarantee than Hogan would get much louder nostalgia pops in the current WWE would than Steve Austin.

As big as the current day WWE like to say that Austin and the Rock are the 2 Biggest Superstars in WWE History, it is telling that during the Attitude Era, WWE never got on a major broadcast (non-cable) network. NBC didn't even bring back Saturday Night's Main Event until the mid-2000's. Until Austin or anyone else can top the ratings for The Main Event, then Hogan will always remain WWE's biggest star. The Main Event wasn't just Hogan though, he was facing Andre in their first 1 on 1 match since Wrestlemania 3. That show drew a 15.2 rating. If Hogan was facing anyone else the number doesn't get close to that. I'm not denying Hogan is WWE's biggest ever star or anything, but that match was an extremely special occasion, and it's number reflects that.
