Krispy Kreme got crushed where I live. There's Dunkin Donuts everywhere and 1 Krispy Kreme opened and it barely lasted a year before closing. The moral is, people dont go to these places to buy dounts they go for coffee and bagels.

Krispy Kreme's are only useful for Luthers. The best donuts tend to be from small family-run shops. There is one in Detroit on Woodward Avenue called The Donut Cutter or something like that which is AWESOME. Support your local businesses if you have them available! Obviously some people only have access to places like Dunkin Donuts, but if you have other options, check them out at least once. Also, The Donut Vault in Chicago thedoughnutvault.tumblr.com/

Dunkin because their coffee destroys Krispy's. The donuts can be a toss up depending on which flavors you are comparing.

The area I grew up in - Beaver County, Pennsylvania - is full of local, hole-in-the-wall doughnut shops. Off the top of my head, there was DeAngelis (preferred by people north of the Ohio River), Mac's (preferred by people south of the Ohio River) and Oram's (world's greatest cinnamon rolls). DeAngelis was always my favorite. I'm also a fan of Sara's Donuts in Atlanta.
As far as chains go, my favorite is Tim Horton's. Krispy Kreme are way too one-note and sweet for me, and Dunkin' goes stale in record time.

I don't like coffee, so Krispy Kreme is better.

Never had Shipley's , so I switch that out with Huck Finn Donuts.
Krispy Kremes are alright, Dunkin Donuts has awesome coffee, plus their sip and scratch games provides this college student with a meal. ;D

Busken's... not sure if it's outside of Cincinnati but by far the best bakery out there. It's always so fresh and awesome.

Right out of the oven, Krispy Kreme can't be beat. This is my opinion. Alot of people's krispy kreme experiences are from gas stations that are housing day old donuts. I love some of the local shops, but its hard to have a conversation about donuts with people around the world about how your local shop is the best. So for this conversation, I'm sticking with the chains that I know. And KK is the best of that bunch.
