In Animal's book he mentions that Moondog Rex was originally Smash. But he was too recognizable at the time and they swapped him out for Darsow. Is there any footage with Moondog as Smash available on DVD?

Very interesting...I never knew that.
Good for Darsow I guess...he's gotten a career out of it.

I can't believe Moondog Rex was considered "too recognizable" considering some of the other gimmick switches they pulled off. I'm pretty sure Rex was even off TV for a year or and Spot when solo (or teamed with other jobbers)

Wrestle Crap actually inducted the original Demolition and mentioned this.

I wouldn't have noticed him as Rex and there's a few photos or screen captures considering he didn't last long. I thought the first few weeks of Demolition looked cool and I liked how they would have different face paint, both Eadie and Darsow as well, up until late 87 or early 88. Their 1988-1991 stuff was more recognizeable though and that's what their figures have.

I'm pretty sure Rex was even off TV for a year or and Spot when solo (or teamed with other jobbers) from what I understand fans actually chanted Moondog or something like it at him. So WWF didn't consider him to recognizable, the fans just recognized him.

The pictures with Smash in color above looks a lot like Randy but I thought it was Darsow with the paint covering his upper arms to hide the tattoo on the one side and having it on both sides looks more like a 'demoliton thing' than hiding the tattoo but after a while they went with the arm pad. It's funny if they used the arm pad so fans wouldn't recognize him as Krusher Kruchev because they went right from a guy who used to be someone to another guy who used to be someone. At least with Eadie he wore masks in his previous gimmicks. The other funny thing is that if they did use an arm pad to cover up who Smash used to be they were doing it because he was a former NWA star and it seems weird to think WWF would think fans would know him as an NWA star.

Feels like a TV show when a character was not as iconic until a new actor or actress took on the character.

Here some pic of Rex as Smash I'm pretty sure every single pic you just posted was of Barry Darsow. This is Randy Colley in the Demolition makeup

This first site shows a few pics of him in that last photo and he has some paint on his chest like the paint on the one Smash's arms so there goes my theory of the tattoo coverup on Darsow. prowrestling.wikia.com/wiki/Randy_Colley/Image_galleryAlso, I think it is Darsow in the promo photo even though that Smash's face looks fatter than Darsow's because Colley had hair, just a tad shorter than Eadie's. Either it is Darsow in the promo photo (which would go along with his short hair at the time) or they cut Colley's hair to avoid Moondog chants but even after the hair cut figured it wouldn't work. It stinks for Colley though because it was such a long, popular gimmick he missed out on and so many wrestlers get repackaged and can get away with it. Edit: Now I see this promo is signed by Colley as Smash so maybe they did cut his hair. community.cardboardconnection.com/forums/other-sports-showcase/50661-some-pictures-2011-nwa-legends-fanfest.htmlWas there ever a story about why Johnny V. managed them, like didn't he find them in a nightclub or something. Was there ever a story as to why they were suddenly with Fuji? I remember around the time Wizard passed Kamala and Sika to Fuji on a Craig DeGeorge report. Do you think Fuji was the better choice? I do but I think Demolition would get over major no matter who managed them. I think Johnny V. was good as a talker, Fuji as an evil presense outside the ring and maybe gave more behind the scenes advice to them.

Colley worked exactly 2 matches as Smash. The 1/5/87 Superstars taping (aired 1/17/87) and the 1/6/87 Wrestling Challenge taping (aired 1/25/87). the team then didn't do anything, not even house shows, until the 1/26/87 Superstars taping where Barry Darsow worked as Smash. actually I was wrong, he worked 3 matches, they had a house show match the day before the Superstars taping.
Colley then briefly worked as The Assassin from late February to mid March of 1987 before coming back as The Shadow near the end of that month and eventually getting paired with Jose Luis Rivera as The Shadows by May which eventually was turned into The Conquistadors after Colley left in October.

I remember around the time Wizard passed Kamala and Sika to Fuji on a Craig DeGeorge report. I think Johnny Valiant was on his way out at this point - the Dream Team had been broken up as a side element of the Piper-Adonis feud and, I think, WWF may have considered him surplus to requirements in some ways - Jimmy Hart was the more active and more flamboyant version of Johnny V, Blassie the older and wilier with more street cred; Slick was the new man and making waves; Fuji was more devious. I don't recall him doing anything away from WWF afterwards; perhaps he was one of Vince, Sr.'s crew and Vince, Jr. felt no further obligations towards him.

Now I wonder if fans watching at home noticed Smash was different just a few weeks later on TV.

I always thought Moondog was the Smash who was in the 1987 SNME battle royal (which Herc won, also where Andre & Hogan first fought before WM3), but apparently that was Darsow with short hair & different facepaint...
