you knew with Fher at the helm, that it was gonna happen. He never wanted there to be a CBA signed right now. I hate having to stick up for the league/owners, but the players get more of the blame pie in my book As much as it kills me to see how much some players are paid (like a certain guy named Gomez) I can't really blame them for going for it if it's offered. Now the owners want them to give some of it back and it's their own damn fault for offering it to begin with. Then when you get Bettman shooting his mouth off about how much money the NHL has made lately, it doesn't really inspire the players to feel sorry for them. Not that simple though. There are several teams hemorrhaging money and basically in danger of folding. The last CBA was done out of desperation to end the lockout. In order to fix it, there needs to be a little giving back by the players. They're getting 57% of revenue right now. I dont see why both sides couldn't just agree on say, 53%. At the end of the day, the only losers are the fans, who have endured 3(!) lockouts in less than 20 years. They can spin it any way they want, neither side gives a f*** about us

I think it's going to end up being 50/50. It will take a while, but that's where we'll end up. What a horribly run league this is.

Oh no doubt the physical roll back is stupid. But I don't see how this percentage at 57 is fair considering no other league has it close to 57 in the US that has a cap

Not overly impressed with NHL 13, might just get another copy of 12.

At least the Devils aren't letting anyone go yet. As much as I don't like Vanderbeek, the organization is really good to its people.

My roommate and I try to do an annual trip to see a Devils away game; the plan this year is currently to go to Toronto for Devils vs. Leafs the week of (United States) Thanksgiving, with a one night stop in Buffalo along the way.
I'd really, really rather not have to change this around to having to settle for Albany Devils games, even if they are playing a couple games in Atlantic City this year.

As much as an insufferable prick Bettman has come off as through this whole process, I think people really overestimate how much power he actually has when it comes to these matters.
All he is is the public face of the owners. He isn't doing or saying anything the owners don't want him to. When it comes to business decisions that expand/contract the league and handle day-to-day operations of the NHL, Bettman's the guy. But when it comes to labor disputes and negotiations like this, Bettman is merely a puppet of the owners. Anyone else in his position would be doing exactly what he's doing.

Since there is nothing happening around the other side of the sea, I'd like to welcome Rich Peverley to SM-Liiga.

While I'm certainly not weeping for the players (they make great money, they get a high percentage of revenues, etc.), the reality is that the owners have made this bed REPEATEDLY, and then they whine and moan about it REPEATEDLY.
Good Lord, up to the zero hour for the lockout we STILL had owners handing out absurd contracts, the ones they're railing against right now.
Fact is, the last time we had CBA drama they basically kneecapped the union...and now they're trying to destroy it completely. Meanwhile, the causes of the league's strife are nearly all the fault of the owners.
I was never really against the Sun Belt expansion, but the owners were insanely aggressive about it because they wanted those rich entry fees new teams/markets have to pay. If your sport doesn't at least establish a foothold in a region first, how do you expect so many new teams in non-traditional markets to survive if, God forbid, some of them aren't managed great?
I mean, Nashville is a WONDERFUL story and a team with great management, but you can't seriously think that you're going to have that success with every new franchise in every new market. Then, surprise-surprise! Some of these new clubs aren't managed great, they hemorrhage money because people who aren't lifelong fans aren't entranced by following a losing team, and the owners complain about it. Never mind that they were cool with the team adding so many new clubs over the past fifteen years or so.
Meanwhile the players have a very smart proposal on the table: more NFL-like revenue sharing. Naturally, we won't get that.
Again, I'm not crying for the players; the players are going to be fine, no matter how much money they bring in. I DO feel for the office workers and staff who are facing layoffs over this.
But the owners can go straight to hell. They made this bed (just like they did in the past), now they want to burn it. You can't crow about league revenues going so sky high and then turn around and tell the players "now take a gigantic pay cut". I mean, there IS a reason for feeling that way: some of the rise in revenue has to do with the current strength of the Canadian dollar, which won't be there forever. But give me a damn break.

Basically, what HMark said is how I feel about the current situation and why I blame the owners far more than the players. I'm not losing any sleep about the players' paychecks, but the owners pull this shit over and over and over again.
