@iankjr: Breaking. A group representing the #Edmonton Oilers, including team president, owner was in Seattle today taking a tour of Key Arena. #NHL The Seattle Oilers? Relocating a Cup winning club, and a former dynasty at that? That'd be harsh. I really do wish the league would do what I'd love to see Major League Baseball do, though at least MLB already has most of these in place: have a salary cap and a floor, but but also have strong revenue sharing and, if you switch to a soft cap, put in a harsh luxury tax. The Rangers or Leafs want to try to buy a Cup? Go right ahead, but you're going to pay a steep penalty, and that money's going to go towards sustaining Phoenix, Florida, Columbus, Edmonton, etc. Again, we can't keep the system as it is: we can't keep expanding and relocating clubs and then sit back and wonder why these teams sometimes fail in non-traditional markets. But, again, the owners have no interest in seriously fixing anything except for player contracts, since that most directly affects their bottom lines.

He did this stunt with Quebec and city council freaked out and they did what he wanted to do. Right now Katz is trying to con the city with a new arena deal by requesting more cut backs to his pocket and keeps making demands that the city doesn't know what he wants anymore and he's throwing a usual tantrum. I just hope city council isn't going to fall for his bullshit bluff again. Plus there is no way the NHL would allow it. Bettman has horrible PR for losing so many Canadian franchises, having 3 lockouts, and the Oilers is one of the few profitable teams to the NHL. Plus he has been so deadset on keeping teams that are losing money with no history that there is no way who would lose a profitable market with a rich history in one of the richest parts in the world.

This is what the owners need. A greedy billionaire owner who wants a 500 million dollar arena in which he receives 100% of the profits 11 months every year on all events, to only pay 100 mil down while the city comes up with the rest and to lease 5 million dollars every year on the arena for 35 years oh and the city has to pay any extra overage construction charges. This is what the NHL owners need for the lockout for their image. f*** Katz. Edmonton hasn't had a decent owner since whoever owned us when we were a WHLPA team. Ok EIG wasnt bad but hey he might be worse than Pockinglintion keep it up with these juvenile scare tactics to all the loyal fans who feed on your bullshit every year especially on the past six seasons. Not a lot of fanbases will ever put up with this piece of shit franchise.

No because Houston got screwed out of getting a NHL team in the 1970s, partially because of the Oilers. So No, I would have been happy.

Difference is Canadas economy was in the shitter as well with Edmonton. Right now Canada is in a economic boom and 90% of the reason is because of Albertas resources. There is a huge economic turn around in Alberta where Edmonton was one of the poorer North American cities to one of the richest in the world. We have the #1 real estate market in North American cities, #1 in creating your own buisness. Edmonton is right now in dire need of fixing the city and cleaning itself out but no Katz wants to fleece the city on a arena in which we have to pay a big majority of and recieve barely any profits. So no it doesn't bother me because it's for two different reasons. The Oulers were losing money, the city was, and the fans weren't there. We are in a huge economic turn around, fan attendance is up despite being one of the dubious teams during post lockout era and we are one of the few profitable teams. We made the league 18million San Jose and Minnesota lost 8 and 6 million. There is no way he'll move the team to a unproven market with a crappy old arena in which cost their NBA team and pay the league a 250 million dollar entry level fee in which he refuses to pit over 100mil on his own arena. It's a tasteless scare tactic to all loyal fans and to the city. So once again f*** YOU KATZ!!!!!

Aeros at least won. They were one of the strongest teams in the WHA. Just because a team is in the Sun Belt does not make them bad. The original Aeros were damn good.

No because Houston got screwed out of getting a NHL team in the 1970s, partially because of the Oilers. So No, I would have been happy. And probably would of had the same fate as the Atlanta Flames. *Note: Let's assume the Houston Oilers have the exact same timeline as the Edmonton Oilers since 1997. I don't know about that. Let's assume that the Oilers did move to Houston at the end of the 95-96 campaign as almost happened. In reality the 96-97 playoffs had that epic Oilers/Stars series that Edmonton ended up winning in 7. If it was the Houston Oilers beating the Dallas Stars in 7 in their first year of operation in Houston, that would have been huge. Maybe not to the extent of the Avs winning the Cup in their first year in Denver, but anytime that a Houston anything beats a Dallas anything, especially if Dallas is better on paper is huge. They would have established a small but loyal fan base a la Phoenix in their first years. The Oilers/Stars rivalry would have continued on and off as it did in reality until the 04 lockout elevating hockey in the Texas area to where I think hockey in in California now where there are small, but extremely die hard fanbases for both teams and a growing and improving young hockey pool in a non-traditional hockey market. Now let's assume that like the real Oilers, the Houston Oilers go on that miracle run and play against another sun belt team in the 'Canes right out of the lockout. Let's also assume the same results occur (i.e. Carolina wins) but regardless of the outcome, the benefits of the two teams in the Finals would have proven Bettman right to an extent in expanding into the Sunbelt as two teams from that region would have played for the Cup. This would mean that Bettman and Bettman apologists would have some ammunition against those against Southern Expansion as the teams in the Finals from 02-07 would have had 3 Cup winners and 6 finalists from the region. This means that Bettman is even more staunch in moving teams like Phoenix and Atlanta and thus Winnipeg and Edmonton would probably still be waiting for a team to come back. As far as where the team would be now in Houston, probably where the Stars are now. The real die-hards remained, but everybody else left and have bad attendance relatively speaking. However, I feel like the fans would be coming back much like they are in Edmonton with how rich in talent the team would be.

The original Aeros were damn good. I've admitted plenty of times there has been successful sun belt stories but it's very inconsistent and they seem to operate only by winning. Like the current successful ones, how much money will they be making for the league when they go on a 3+ year playoff drought? The problem is it should be the city and people from the city wanting a NHL franchise, not the other way around. Instead there seems to be a lot of chasing for magic beans of "the potential" than a sure thing. I'm still waiting for American players not to only come from the NE or Minnesota. Also Triplethreatmark it's an impossible thing to predict on how the Houston Oilers would of been. When most teams move there are tons of management changes and the owner would have a way different philosophy from the previous owner on how a team should run. I'm sure they would of been better because Houston is a warmer place in which they would of attracted more people and had more money to throw around and had the pressure of being good right away. But still impossible to tell. Plus I said in other previous posts in other NHL threads I wouldn't mind a Houston team. Hell it's what Dallas desperately needs to rejuvenate their franchise.

Tyler Myers is technically from Texas. Emerson Etem, a kid that is one the most valuable prospects in the Anaheim system is from Long Beach, CA. Blake Geoffrion is from Florida; both of Ulf Samuelsson's boys list Phoenix as their home town. Hell, Trevor Lewis is from Salt Lake City. TJ Oshie is from Washington. So yes, there is NHL level talent and prospects coming from the non-traditional states in the US.

I admit it is still small, but there is High School ice hockey being played in South Texas.

I dont understand what's so hard here. The current player's revenue is 57%. The owners want to roll back the player's piece of revenue to 49%. Agree to 53%, tweak the cap to include some revenue sharing. Bang. Deal done

Well the end of the lockout won't be Friday...
