Back to the Future, Terminator, Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Basic Instinct, Robocop and so on. Once you hear their music you get flooded with memories, it's instantly recognisable. Maybe it's just me, but whatever happened to that? I can't think of a simple recent film where the music weren't very run of the mill. The last I can remember is Harry Potter.

Very true. Keep in mind, I'm talking about composed music, not songs.

The Social Network and Tron:Legacy have great, atypical soundtracks.

I liked Tron and Slumdog.
There are a few out there like The Sitter and The Hoax with memorable tracks, but not released.

There have been some damn good ones in recent years IMO. Tron, Social Network, Despicable Me (Pharrel Williams was behind it), Inception, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

I don't know if it's a lost art in general but it's definitely a lost art when it comes to Horror movies. a lot of modern movies, rather than coming up with a spooky, suspenseful soundtrack that fits the mood and makes things creepy, decide instead to have a bunch of extreme metal. as a metalhead myself, nothing takes me out of what's supposed to be a scary movie like hearing Lamb of God in a scene that's supposed to be scary. that kind of music is too loud and abrasive to create any kind of scary atmosphere. Heavy metal and Horror are 2 great tastes that go together like pickles and milk.

Moneyball had probably the best soundtrack of any movie in a long while.

I think I simply have an old school taste to this stuff. And maybe the fact that I don't watch recent films as much as I do/have seen those who had those great soundtracks I like.

Let's see... Lord of the Rings is pretty memorable. Pirates of the Caribbean as well.
Um, yeah, I got nothing else.
