Besides, it seems like ever since they moved them up a lot of kickoffs fly out of bounds anyway (not unless that's just a Matt Prater thing), so I don't think I'd miss the kickoff that much. I'm not sure if that's the way to go about it, though. I don't think it's a Prater thing though he does more than most. They moved up the kicks 5 yards last year just to get more touchbacks and cut down on returns.

Oh, yeah. I just mentioned him since his leg strength is ridiculous, I figured he might have more touchbacks than an average kicker - you could probably throw Janikowski in there, as well.

I don't like it, but I'm starting to get onboard with anything that makes players as safe as possible without killing the game outright. Lots of injuries happen on kickoffs so if you can reduce the risk of that significantly by doing this, then by all means. I've seen more injuries on passing plays this year than kickoff returns. I know that's totally anecdotal, but it seems to me that, while injuries on kickoff returns have more potential to be season and career threatening, that these injuries aren't happening every other kickoff like everyone says they do. I'd like to see the numbers on which plays injuries occur on.

I heard that was the reason why the kickoff was moved off in the first place, as well as the motivation behind this proposed change. Contrary to popular belief, Goddell doesn't think of these rule changes to make fans hate him or for shits and giggles. The NFL is concerned about player safety, mainly because of that massive lawsuit they're facing.
Maybe they have access to data we don't about serious head injuries on kickoff, or the kickoff game is the easiest place to reduce injury without changing the game in a massive fashion compared to other parts, like the passing game.
What I think the NFL should seriously consider is looking at outside padding helmets. I think the way helmets were made, even with all the inside padding, are still THE big contributor to concussions and more serious head traumas.

The thing with what Goodell brought up, would the NFLPA really go along with something that would make quite a few players worthless and expendable? I get that there is probably not much they could do but doing something that would make special teams players other than a punter and kicker obsolete seems like something they'd try and fight like crazy.

So, they are trying to take out the foot in football, for the most part with that rule, right? At least as far as kickoffs are concerned.
As someone who played special teams in high school, I applaud player safety. But to remove a weapon like, say for example, Percy Harvin or Devin Hester, you take out a crucial element, and you also eliminate jobs as well, especially ones that specialize in that department.
Don't forget that Goodell wants the 18-game season still.

It's just amazing what a two-faced liar Roger Goodell is. The TIME Magazine cover has the words "THE ENFORCER: How far will the NFL Commissioner go to protect the game he loves?" plastered on it.
Well, I'll tell you how far he'll go. He'll go about as far as he can to risk player safety and damaging long-term injuries handing out absurd fines for borderline tackles, all but eliminating the purpose of sacking a quarterback or tackling a receiver over the middle of the field and attempting to outright eliminate the kickoff...but then he'll turn around and practically demand an 18-game season.
But don't worry, because of his lapdogs Peter King and Chris Berman, we'll be continually fed a bowl of crap over how Goodell is so sensitive to the health and needs of the players and how "protecting the shield" is of the utmost importance to him.
Goodell should thank his lucky stars every day that Gary Bettman exists, because that's the only reason he doesn't wear the crown of "Single Worst American Professional Sports Commissioner".

At what point does the league and Roger Goodell realize that you can't just change the way the game is played simply because injuries MIGHT happen. Injuries can happen on any play and at the end of the day, we're playing football right?
I understand player's safety and all that but they know what they signed up for. They know the risks with playing football. You can't protect them from every single, solitary bruise they may receive while playing the game. At some point the brass of the NFL have to realize that injuries and concussions are just a part of the game and it's there's no use in changing the way the game is played simply because injuries are a possibility.
They're not playing a board game. They're crashing into each other with their full bodies on almost every play.

Dont forget the new weekly Thursday night games, where 2 teams are now playing 2 games in 4 days. But he's all about player safety!!

Team sources tell the Union-Tribune San Diego that Chargers owner Dean Spanos plans to fire both coach Norv Turner and GM A.J. Smith at season's end.

So apparently Skelton is starting over Lindley for next week's game. So Larry Fitzgerald might get to catch a pass now.

Chances are they'll win a game and he'll give them both 10 year extensions. It's the San Diego way. That may be hyperbole, but the point still stands.

Last Thursday, Drew Brees threw 5 picks.
Chances it happens again tonight?

I can't see Palmer throwing 5 picks. Maybe a couple, but not 5.
I hope he throws 5, though. ;D

In my opinion, the MVP award is down to a two-horse race between Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, so whoever has a bad game in the final four weeks is going to lose it to the other. So, as is usually the case when Manning and Brady face off... {Spoiler}Brady wins

Brady's not winning it this year. He had a better case last year.
