He always knows what to do in a danger situation. Surrender or retreat while putting himself first. He did manage to win the war on Waxworld. And somehow stopped that corrosive entity that threatened Red Dwarf at the end of series 8. If I ever ranked my 50 or 100 greatest TV characters of all time, I think Rimmer would rank somewhere in the top 10.

I know they tried to do an American version in the 90's. With Craig Bierko as Lister. Which, if you've ever seen Craig Bierko, you know is staggeringly inappropriate casting, even he thought so. Also Cat was going to be a girl. As was Holly. Here's a picture. The fact that Chris Barrie and Danny John-Jules were approached to replace the actors initially cast as Rimmer and Cat in an attempt to fix the mess that was Red Dwarf USA speaks volumes. Of course, Barrie turned down the offer and the project was dead before DJJ made a decision. Bierko did an interview with Kevin Pollak where he said the British show was terrific and the Americans ruined it completely, he said he was completely wrong for the part, they tried to turn Lister into Han Solo, they should have gotten a John Belushi type. But he needed to pay the rent, so he took the job, he said people should seek out the original show because it's hilarious. Always liked Bierko, he's a Facebook friend, he's funny as hell on there.

He did manage to win the war on Waxworld. a VERY VERY loose description of the word win more like The enemy was eradicated. That sounds like a complete and total victory to me. Granted, his troops did did suffer some casualties as well...but they still won.
