They're awful. They're bland. They appeal to the lowest common denominator of 'rock' listeners. They write awful lyrics ("Crying Like a Bitch", anyone?). And they're plagiarists. Case in point: I'm glad to be told I'm in the lowest common denominator because I like a band whose musical standards are below your high moral tastes. A simple "I don't like them because..." Would suffice. Carry on. Don't take it personal. I'm really talking about the people who like bands that are force fed to us by radio (Godsmack, Nickelback, Seether, etc.) and swear that these are the only bands on earth that matter, despite their shallow/simplistic lyrics and shoddy songwriting, and fail to expand their horizons to discover other bands that might be a bit deeper with their songwriting. Many people I know who like Godsmack also like stuff that isn't the same tired radio stuff, so despite them liking Godsmack, they're definitely not the lowest-common-denominator types.

Oh, I didn't take it personally. I know the types you're talking about. I went to see Godsmack this summer (actually went to see Shinedown, who Godsmack was opening for), and the people you describe were in abundance there. And while I still like Godsmack (particularly the first two albums), like you said, I have expanded my musical horizons since then. All is good.

"I Stand Alone" is one of the worst mainstream rock songs of all time. The combination of the nasally screaming vocals, droning guitars and laughably faux "badass" lyrics make it sound like something written by some angsty high school garage band. It's made doubly worse by the fact that I'll always associate it with the ruination of the Prince of Persia series.
I've never heard anything else they've done, but honestly that song is so awful that I don't feel I need to.

Eh, I can't be bothered to hate a band like Godsmack. They don't really make the most imaginative music, but they give the fans what they want. I haven't heard of them doing anything overtly negative besides Sully Erna using a slur to describe Scott Stapp, but really, who among us hasn't gone over the line to mock members of Creed? Also, I'll just invoke the Hot Topic Principle: it's not their fault their fans don't have the most refined tastes. They're getting paid to make music. As long as they can keep roofs over their heads, good on 'em. For the most part, I can't separate them from their songs in the (I believe) NAVY commercials, and how weird Sonny, the lead singer, got whenever it was discussed in interviews. No matter how the question was phrased, who asked it, or whatever the context, Sonny would just give either the vaguest angry answers or the angriest vague answers on the planet. Wikipedia sez they agreed to let the Navy use their songs because people in the military were fans. However, Sully said the band doesn't support war. I'm sure the money was too good to pass up too.

Skip Godsmack and just listen to Alice in Chains.
