Flight for best original screenplay over Looper is insanity.

Also, maybe it was just me, but I didn't really like the way the nominations were presented. They just seem to have a bunch of quips and filler throughout it, unlike previous years, where it was just straight and to the point.

Ben Affleck not getting a best director nom is bulls*** Completely agreed. It just once again shows the ridiculous political bias of the Academy. Affleck has been known to speak out against it, therefore gets snubbed when he does something worthy of a nomination. Also, LOL at The Dark Knight Rises. After seeing all the endless "For Your Consideration" ads WB made for the thing, that is hilarious to me.

I'm surprised Moonrise Kingdom got snubbed for Best Picture.

Awesome, thanks. Having listened to them all, I think Someday will probably win, even though I didn't think it was the best song in the movie. I liked Before my Time too. Skyfall works great as a Bond song, although I doubt I'd listen to it any other time. Pi's lullaby was really relaxing, but I don't think it'll turn any heads to win. Everybody Needs A Best Friend was funny and pretty well done, surprising considering who wrote it. But I don't think it's the type of song that will win in a year when there's competition from more dramatic songs. Then again, if Three-6-Mafia can win, then any of them can.

Is the lack of Judi Dench considered a snub? I had heard nothing but praise for her performance in Skyfall. I still need to see that.
Surprised to see Hugh Jackman get the nomination for Les Miserables. Pleased, but surprised, all the same.

Is the lack of Judi Dench considered a snub? I had heard nothing but praise for her performance in Skyfall. I still need to see that. From what I read, I thought it would either be Dench or Maggie Smith getting the last nomination. I was surprised when Jacki Weaver's name came up.

Meh Oscar list, but at least it's nowhere near as "baity" as past years. And while I thought Waltz did a great job in Django, Leo should have gotten the nomination as I think he had the breakout performance.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower should have been nominated for best adapted screenplay.
I'm fine with Moonrise Kingdom getting snubbed. I thought it was pretty boring and tried way to hard.
John Hawkes was NOT nominated for Best Actor. Bradley Cooper was.
Biggest snubs, as mentioned, come in the director category. Also, figured Leo would pick up a supporting actor nom for Django.
My predictions: Best Picture - Lincoln Best Actor - Daniel Day-Lewis Best Actress - Jennifer Lawrence Best Supporting Actor - Christoph Waltz Best Supporting Actress - Sally Field Best Director - Ang Lee Best Animated Feature - Frankenweenie

Ben Affleck not getting a best director nom is bulls*** Yep. I'd say the same about Quentin Tarantino as well. Those two directed a couple of the best movies from last year.

Ben Affleck not getting a best director nom is bulls*** This. I am also REALLY disappointing that Skyfall didn't get a Best Picture, Lead Actor & Actress, Supporting Actor & Actress nomination. How did Javier Bardem, Daniel Craig and Judi Dench not get any nomminations is crazy to me, especially for Bardem. I hope at least Roger Deakins wins for Cinematography, it is a truly beautiful film Also has anyone seen, heard or liked Amour or Beasts of the Southern Wild I haven't heard of either two. In my opinion they have made some good choices and left out some deserving one's, Jeff Who Lives At Home, Skyfall, Hobbit, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Hitchcock and one or two others didn't get many nominations if at all. Nearly forgot Looper as well, how the f*** has that not got anything...at all?! I do love the fact that Joaquin Phoenix got nominated after everything he said about the Academy last year . I am a fan of the guy and of Paul Thomas Anderson so I really need to getting around to seeing The Master when it is out on DVD

www.deadline.com/2013/01/oscar-nominations-2013-list-announced-85th-academy-awards-nominees/OK, now to play the prediction game: Best Animated Feature: Wreck-It Ralph. I believe this is the end of the Pixar streak. Ralph was just a better movie than Brave was. Best Adapted Screenplay: Shocked Les Mis was not nominated here. Lincoln takes this one. Best Original Screenplay: Moonrise Kingdom. Given Anderson and his crew kinda got snubbed out of the major awards, this one by default. Best Supporting Actor: Tommy Lee Jones, "Lincoln". Called this one in mid-movie. He did a great job as Thaddus Stevens. Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway, "Les Miserables". Feel bad for Sally Field, since she did well and any other year, might have had a shot. But Hathaway was outstanding and this is well deserved. Best Actress: Jessica Chastain, "Zero Dark Thirty". This is the consolation prize for Zero Dark Thirty since Bigelow was not nominated for director and they are not going to win best picture. The Academy can acknowledge a performance safely while avoiding the controversy of the work as a whole. Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis, "Lincoln". Safest best of the night, no question. Best Director: Steven Spielberg, "Lincoln". Surprised Hooper did not get nominated for Les Mis and no Bigelow for ZDT. That being said, this one is easy. Best Picture: Les Miserables. I will pause for you all to pick your jaws up off the ground. I really think Les Mis will score an upset here over Lincoln. Argo is really the only other dark horse here. Lincoln is a good movie, but not great IMHO. There is precedent for an upset as well as Spielberg got director for Saving Private Ryan but lost best picture to Shakespeare in Love. I just have a feeling the same thing is happening here, plus I really believe Les Mis is a better movie. YMMV.

Surprised as hell at the actor Django got nominated.
I mean, I hate Leo and he never improves a movie he was in, but he was a safe bet I thought. And Jackson was pretty much perfect.
Waltz was just sort of... there.

Pretty surprised not one of the following directors were nominated: Kathryn Bigelow, Quentin Tarantino, Tom Hooper, and Ben Affleck.
I always try to see all of the Best Pictures nominees. So far I've only seen Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln, Les Miserables, and Django Unchained. Argo comes out on Blu-ray a week before the Oscars (I think). Silver Linings Playbooks is supposedly getting a wider release soon.
I missed my chance to see Life of Pi when it was playing near me. Beasts of the Southern Wild and Amour are available now to rent/stream/buy online. I'll watch them before the Oscars.

After TDK won nothing except for a sympathetic award for Heath Ledger in 2008, we're really suprised that TDKR gets nothing?
