WHERE THE f*** IS THE SECRET WORLD OF ARRIETTY FOR BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
It was vastly better than both Pirates and Brave. This is horseshit! Arrietty was by far the better animated film with a female protagonist this year. Pirates and Brave are both meh at best and don't deserve their noms. Wreck-It Ralph and ParaNorman totally deserve their noms though, and I hope one of them wins. If Brave wins........oh man........there will be hell to pay.

Paul Thomas Anderson should be up for Best Director and The Master for Best Picture. f*** you, Hollywood. So, what was the point of that movie? Masculinity vs. the will of power? How all people have a master in one way or another. I'll admit, the performances were... great? But the movie itself was kind of pointless.

Spirited Away came out in 2001, wasn't dubbed until 2002. It won its Best Animated Feature Oscar for the 2002 dubbing. So Arrietty qualifies.

I don't think Arrietty qualifies.
From Oscar.org
"A picture first theatrically exhibited outside the U.S. prior to the Los Angeles County qualifying run shall be eligible for submission provided the prior exhibition takes place in a commercial motion picture theater after January 1, 2011. After the start of its initial theatrical engagement, a picture may be exhibited on television and other nontheatrical media, provided those exhibitions occur outside the U.S. No film that is shown inside the U.S. in any nontheatrical medium prior to its Los Angeles County qualifying run shall be eligible for Academy Awards."
To me, that says that foreign films that are shown in the US can't have their initial release prior to the start of 2011. Arrietty was first released in 2010, so it doesn't qualify. Spirited Away was released in 2001 outside the US, and in 2002 inside, so it would.
At least, that's how I'm taking it.

If I recall, Disney submitted Spirited Away for consideration as a 2002 film (English dub version). Either they decided they weren't going to do this for the The Secret World of Arrietty or they no longer could do that. Was The Secret World of Arrietty released theatrically with the English dub in 2012? I just remember being released on Blu-ray. Spirited Away did receive a theatrical release with the English dub if I recall.

Well that's bull.
It is better than at least two of the actual noms(possibly 3 but I haven't seen Frankenweenie).
Ok so if they couldn't put Arrietty, then why not Hotel Transylvania? That was better than Brave and Pirates as well.
Basically point is Brave and Pirates shouldn't be nominated period.

I think both Brave and Pirates were good enough to be considered. Brave wasn't the best Pixar has done, but it wasn't a bad movie at all. The characters were well done, the animation was stunning, and it's only real fault was the fact that it's story took from several Disney movies.
I though Pirates was just fun, it wasn't serious or anything, but I dig Aardman's animation and storytelling style.
Meanwhile, I thought Hotel Transylvania was just a forgettable movie.

Another possible reason for the Arrietty snub is maybe Disney could only submit 2 films. If that is the case of course they would submit their in house productions over a film that they only did the dubbing and distribution on.
Still, come on Ralph and Norman!

I really doubt the date of the dubbing matters. As the site said, I think it had to do with the fact that Arrietty first showed more than a year prior to the nomination period. So it wouldn't ever have been eligible based on the fact that there was more than a year between their first release and the US release.

Well then f*** Disney for waiting until 2012 to release the dub.
Film should be recognized. It is easily one of the better Ghibli films.

The one snub that is bothering me is Moonrise Kingdom not getting nominated for Cinematography. The movie was gorgeous and was very colorful and vibrant looking like a childrens storybook. Like its definite in my top 3 films of the year and I wasn't expecting tons of nominations but I feel it really deserved a nom for cinematography.

Silver Lining Playbook is the first film since Reds in '82 to have nomininations in all 4 acting categories.

Update: Watched Beasts of the Southern Wild today. Sure, it's a good movie. The young girl is charming and does a good job. I can't see her actually winning the Oscar, certainly not over Jessica Chastain. It's just my opinion, but I think Moonrise Kingdom was better than this.

I have yet to see Argo, Beasts Of The Southern Wild, Life of Pi, or Silver Linings Playbook.
Predictions: Best actor is either DDL or Jackman.... Actress should go to Chastain with little hesitation... supporting actress for either Hathaway or Field... supporting actor for Christoph Waltz... director is practically set up for Spielberg... either Lincoln or Zero Dark Thirty for picture...

I really think Les Mis will score an upset here over Lincoln. Argo is really the only other dark horse here. Lincoln is a good movie, but not great IMHO. There is precedent for an upset as well as Spielberg got director for Saving Private Ryan but lost best picture to Shakespeare in Love. I just have a feeling the same thing is happening here, plus I really believe Les Mis is a better movie. YMMV. Before today, I thought it was a three way race between Lincoln, Argo & Les Mis. However, after both Argo & Les Mis failed to get best director noms, Lincoln looks like the clear front-runner. When's the last time a Best Picture Winner did not have the director at least nominated as well? I think it's pretty clear the Academy's top 5 flicks are the ones with the director noms. If anything, the dark horse to upset Lincoln now seems to be Silver Linings Playbook. Actors nominated in all four acting categories plus screenplay, director and picture? That's the film I see as what could be the "Shakespeare in Love" of this year's Oscars.
