I really think Les Mis will score an upset here over Lincoln. Argo is really the only other dark horse here. Lincoln is a good movie, but not great IMHO. There is precedent for an upset as well as Spielberg got director for Saving Private Ryan but lost best picture to Shakespeare in Love. I just have a feeling the same thing is happening here, plus I really believe Les Mis is a better movie. YMMV. Before today, I thought it was a three way race between Lincoln, Argo & Les Mis. However, after both Argo & Les Mis failed to get best director noms, Lincoln looks like the clear front-runner. When's the last time a Best Picture Winner did not have the director at least nominated as well? I think it's pretty clear the Academy's top 5 flicks are the ones with the director noms. If anything, the dark horse to upset Lincoln now seems to be Silver Linings Playbook. Actors nominated in all four acting categories plus screenplay, director and picture? That's the film I see as what could be the "Shakespeare in Love" of this year's Oscars. 1990 with Driving Miss Daisy. Happened two previous times to that, Grand Hotel in 1932 and Wings in 1920. So yeah, you're right, the odds are very low for Les Mis and Argo.

To me, the big glaring snub was Hitchcock. Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren both turned in Oscar-worthy performances, and it was IMO the best movie of the year.

Roger Deakens is the man.

Ben Affleck is all "what I got to do for a director nom doe?" It makes no fundamental sense. You cannot logically nominate a best picture while simultaneously snubbing the director. It's his picture. It's his directing that ties it all together and presents the final product. It's absurd. It'd be like saying that this was the best steak in town, while giving no credit to the cook. Plus, no Leo nom for Django is a f***ing travesty. The Oscars are so contrived. I don't know why anyone would even put any stock in them anymore.

I'm on Team Affleck BUT there are 9 Best Picture nominees and 5 Best Director nominees. Four directors weren't gonna get nominated regardless.

I haven't seen Amour but I'm rooting for Emmanuelle Riva based on her performance in Hiroshima Mon Amour in 1959

However, the acting performances and the writing were not the best bits about Argo, the directing clearly carried that film. Affleck getting snubbed again is a freaking joke.

One nomination for the best grossing film of 2012? F*** this s***.
Although Lincoln was amazing, and Skyfall rocked. So I hope Lincoln does win best picture.

But this 9 Best picture nom stuff was amended in the last few years. There's nothing stopping them from having an equal director to best picture ratio. The Academy makes the rules. They've changed them before.

I just realized that Ennio Morricone, perhaps the greatest composer in film history (who has never won a competitive Oscar) wrote original music for Django Unchained. I'm not really surprised he wasn't nominated since his composition probably could be considered closer to a piece of music from a score rather than a traditional song (with lyrics).

As said before the academy is mostly made up of white men over the age of 60. Yeah, a bunch people who qualify for a discount at a buffet and have their own parking space at shopping malls are the ones who decide what this generations best movies and performances are. Remember a couple of years ago when 'The Social Network' was the favuorite to take out best picture, but then all of a sudden it was quickly shifted to 'The King's Speech' in a late surge. Just look at the subject matter of both films and read the first sentence of this post again. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) And it's always been like this, so we just have to accept it. Because if you're movie was not nominated, does not make it any less good. Anyway it's good to see Robert De Niro get nominated. Not seen 'The Silver Linings Playbook' yet. Bobby De can not end his career with crap.

So, on the one hand, looks like Jimmy Kimmel isn't the only one f****g Ben Affleck.
On the other hand, when you think about it, this may be the best think to happen to him.
I think this is the thing that solidifies his comeback, because now a ton of people are talking about how it's a disgrace that he didn't get nominated, now he has the sympathy of the general public behind him, so the days of Ben Affleck jokes should finally be over.
