What you just described in your last paragraph is who Bane is. That's the Bane that was created by Chuck Dixon for the Knightfall storyline. It's sad that common perception of the character has since become what you described as your concerns, with most of the blame falling on his horrible depictions in Batman & Robin, Batman: The Animated Series, and the Arkham video games. My point is, Christopher Nolan doesn't deserve credit for making Bane a good character. Bane already was a good character, but only comic fans knew it. He's described as intelligent in the Arkham games as well. In his bio he is, but then when you play the game, he's just some growling roid-rager trying to smash you.

Yeah, the portrayal of Bane in Batman non-comics before DKR was horrendous. Batman TAS was probably the closest to getting it right and even then they focused way too much on the Venom aspect of the character rather than his intellect and cunning.
The Arkham games at least gave this part of Bane lip service in his dossiers and you actually see that intellect somewhat in Arkham City. But in Arkham Asylum he's otherwise just a generic musclehead boss where you have to cut him off from the Venom/Titan.
