This thread makes me wish VH-1 would bring back "True Spin," a show about misinterpretations of songs.
Anyway, how about "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins? The story goes that he wrote it after seeing a man refuse to help a drowning victim. Later on (according to legend) he somehow tracked down the guilty party, sent him a ticket to a show, and performed the song while shining a big spotlight on the guy.

Pearl Jam's Alive.
Interestingly, I once sang Every Breath you Take at a college Karaoke with its intended meaning after I'd found out my Girlfriend was cheating on me the day before.

Whenever I hear his story, I like to imagine that the guy didn't care much for Phil Collins and gave his ticket to someone else, or he did go but switched his seat with someone.

We Are Young by Fun. is NOT about being young and enjoying your life, it's all the opposite, it's basically being wasted in a bar asking to be carried home and feeling "young" just for that night, because he know he isn't anymore.

Phil was too busy preparing song lyrics to rescue the drowning person as well?

Oh, another one I remember: many people still seem to beliebe "The Future's so bright (I Gotta Wear Shades)" is a happy-go-lucky feel-good song. It's really about an impending nuclear holocaust. The future is bright because of the flash of the bombs detonating.

Phil was too busy preparing song lyrics to rescue the drowning person as well? Well, most versions of the story claim he was a little kid when it happened or was in some way impaired from doing it himself. Oddly enough, those "details" tend to change depending on the person telling it and only surface after people asked the exact same thing you did.

Turning Japanese is not about masturbation. It was about a break up and going crazy. Of course people will chooser the former because they're stupid. Honestly I'm not sure which explanation sounds more racist.

Back to Green Day, how many graduations have used "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)"....yeah, classy. They played that during a PowerPoint on our last day, which befuddled me and made me question who put it together.

Despite popular belief, REM's "The One I Love" is not a romantic love song. not really my favorite interpretation, but I do laugh at a few of my friends who are conservative as you can get and pretty much support everything George Bush did during his time as president loving Green Day's American Idiot CD singing along with most of the songs and openly admitting that Holiday is their favorite song. I didn't have the heart to tell them that the CD goes against everything they believe. That doesn't only happen with music. The biggest Family Guy fans I know are also the most conservative.

I'm of the belief that schools know damn well what the song is actually about and use it as a way to subtly tell graduating students to f*** off. still inexcusable when it gets played at funerals though. my cousin killed himself and they played it at his funeral. I cringed.

The funnier belief is them thinking Jesus of Suburbia is about a guy finding God

"Every Breath You Take", it's still funny how many people think it's a romantic song and have it played at weddings. Same with "I Will Always Love You". It's a breakup song.

Hollaback Girl is a good one. Most people I've heard think its a sexual reference of some sort, when in reality, its one of those "independent statement" songs, as hollaback is a cheerleading term. Hence, all the cheerleading/band leading in the video.

And of course there's people thinking Semi-Charmed Life is some optimistic song about something or other when it's really about a drug user getting addicted to crystal meth and having sex.
