www.wishtv.com/dpp/news/indiana/late-night-booms-shake-evansvillenow This has been happening near me and I was talking with a friend who lives in Evansville this afternoon about it. But, this is not just confined to that area, basically there have been reports of these loud sometime cannon like booming sounds usually at night and at times, residents have been woken up by them and their house will rattle. There have been news reports about this, but every one of them say they can't figure it out. mining blasts have been ruled out, and people seem genuinely clueless as you can read in the article Anyway, I thought I'd throw this out here to see if anyone else is experiencing this, because from what I have been told, it's not just in the Evansville Indiana area

Perhaps it's related to the helicopters firing off blanks above metropolitan areas like Miami and Houston.

I would say that the storms from last night could have upset the delicate balance of a few mobile meth labs in the area, but I would think that burning vans would have been noticed by now. Perhaps someone made a few really large noise bombs? I grew up not too far away and those were popular prank items, albeit dangerous ones.

Well, I heard some booms last night here in Detroit, and the comments section of your link seems to mention similar booming in Wisconsin, so whatever it is, it seems to be going around the Midwest in particular.
Odd...
