the Authority as written by Mark Millar. he turned them from morally ambiguous characters to "wouldn't it be totally great if a bunch of totalitarian thugs murdered everyone I personally disliked and just sat around humping and drinking all day?" thankfully later writers fixed them. More like anyone written by Mark Millar. Civil War is a prime example of how he turns once liked characters into jerks if not outright villains. For that matter, there's a reason that the Kick Ass movie was better than the comic.

Scott Summers. Even before he became a militant pseudo-villain, I couldn't stand how self-righteous and egotistical he was.
Severus Snape. The whole "tortured soul" thing is an excuse, sure, but he doesn't have to be a complete dick to a group of children who never did anything to him. A lot of HP fans worship Snape, but I just don't get it.

Spider-Man is a hypocritical and selfish git who just screws everything up around him and whines about it afterwards.

Pick a kid from Freaks and Geeks other than Harris or Gordon. I'll make the argument.

I knew this thread would call out Ted Mosby at some point. Shame because he's actually my favourite character on the show. The writers kind of damaged that show for me in the first episode because by the end of that episode I was desperate for Ted and Robin to end up together and that's just not gonna happen obviously. But anyway, I'm getting off-topic.
Unlikable main characters:
- Lily Aldrin (How I Met Your Mother) - The entire cast of The Big Bang Theory (it's one of the many reasons I can't watch that abomination of a show) - The entire cast of It's Always Sunny (although this one is intentional) - Shane Vendrell (The Shield) - Dutch (The Shield) - Everyone in Friends except for Joey and Chandler - Diane Chambers (Cheers) - Walter White (Breaking Bad) - Again, probably intentional though.

I liked Logan Echolls a hell of a lot more than that doofus Duncan Kane. Season 2 of Veronica Mars got better after he left. To be fair, Veronica herself was starting to become unlikeable to some of the fandom near the end of the series.
Lana Lang was already mentioned.
Chuck Bass from Gossip Girl(dude tried to rape Serena and Jenny in separate scenes in the pilot episode)

I wouldn't say I ever hated Veronica or anything, but I know I was irked at how she'd treat Logan when they were together in season three. I'm an unabashed Logan Echolls fan, so I disagree about Jedi's assessment of his character. He knows that already though haha.

As mentioned earlier, Debra from "Everybody Loves Raymond"
The Barones basically had an abusive marriage. Debra constantly verbally abused Ray and hit him quite often too. Plus I'm convinced that Ray had some sort of mental disability (there are times on show where his actions go way beyond just "the oafish husband" to the point where he seems to not know the difference between right and wrong) which makes her treatment of him even worse.

A lot of HP fans worship Snape, but I just don't get it. Snape was a dick at times but, I couldn't help but sympathise with him solely because James Potter was a bigger dick yet got away with it. He was an arrogant, bullying, cocky little toerag who was seemingly loved by everyone and targeted Snape just because he was a Slytherin and was poor. I couldn't stand James Potter.

Rachel from Friends. I saw the episode "The One with the Morning After" (Ross trying to stop Rachel from finding out he slept with Chloe the Xerox girl when he and Rachel "were on a break!") today, for the first time since it first aired on UK television. I found myself utterly HATING Rachel and not really liking Ross, but more prepared to take his side. I can't remember what the desired reaction was back then, but I found her to get progressively more annoying over the course of the show, and I think this was the start of it. The only characters of the main six I didn't want to garotte after the show finally came to an end were Joey and Phoebe. I also grew to hate Rose Tyler in Doctor Who over time as well. At first I think I was surprised that the " Because We Want To" girl wasn't completely terrible. I was glad to see her gone from the show in the end. I was also going to mention Malcolm from "Malcolm in the Middle" but I think even the people running the show worked out he was an unlikeable little s*** later on. Besides, the best characters were clearly Hal and Dewey, as any episode revolving around them was instantly better than anything else.

I still liked Veronica despite that and some of her other actions. My feelings on Duncan are that he essentially stood there and did absolutely nothing while Logan and their 09er friends treated Veronica the way they did after Lilly's death.

I mean, for the majority of the series, Logan showed Veronica that he would do anything for her. He made mistakes, I'm not trying to deny that, but for someone who loved her so fully, she sure was hard on him most of the time. Duncan was that way about basically everything. I don't want to say he was a bad guy, because I don't believe he was, but his extremely passive nature could be annoying. You wondered if anything ever riled him up, you know?

Plenty of superheroes annoy me by not being honest and telling their on/off girlfriend that they are superheroes. Lana Lang has been mentioned on this thread a lot, but she has a right to be angry. If Clark just said "I have superpowers" she would have understood. Peter Parker is another douche in that way. Just tell the bloody truth you dweebs.

Has anyone mentioned the main characters in the Twilight series?
Or is that just way too obvious an answer? LOL.
Probably THE most unlikeable characters in the history of literature, haha.

Do reality shows count?
If they do, Kat Von D in the last couple of seasons of LA Ink. Although that could be as much down to the way the show was put together. I also didn't like the forcing of Nikki Sixx or Jesse James down my throat. Corey Miller's stuff was the reason I kept watching the later ones, as it's painfully obvious he was the best artist on the show, and even then, he kinda took a backseat to all the drama and crap.
Sadly NY Ink isn't much better.

James was a douche, but he had the excuse of being a teenager. Snape was far worse and got both James and Lily killed, then made their son's life a misery for the most part. JK Rowling tried to shoehorn a face turn into the series by having Snape praised after his death and even going as far as naming one of Harry's kids after him.
