Why can't Spider-man be gay? Because he's not gay.

I have no problem with gay comic book characters, or gay anythings, really; I do have a problem with trying to make a character something that they never were before without good reason. You can't just twist around an established character trait into something it's clearly not. That's the epitome of lazy writing.
Now if this were a successor to the Spider Man persona who just happened to be gay, then I see absolutely nothing wrong with that.

The idea interests me, but in part due to how completely sick and tired I am of Mary Jane Watson as a character.

Donald Glover as a gay black Spider-Man in the next reboot.
He could pull it off.

Donald Glover as a gay black Spider-Man in the next reboot. He could pull it off. Possibly with the weirdest boner.

Let's compromise a bit. Mary Jane becomes a transsexual.

Peter Parker should be bitten by a gay radioactive spider, make it completely absurd.

"I have the proportionate thpeed, thtrength, and fabulouthneth of a gay thpider!. because if they are going to do it, they need to go all the way and be borderline if not flat out offensive. Also acceptable is a Woody Allen nebish Jew stereotype.

Judging by Andrew Garfield's performance in the film, I thought Spider-Man WAS gay

It's a fictional character in a film adaptation of medium where the being 100% faithful to the source material is an impossibility anyway.
If it adds something new to the character, why not have a gay Spider-Man? Or a black Spider-Man? You've already had your movies with traditional Spider-Man and Every-act-of-heroism-I'm-responsible-for-is-me-thwarting-something-that's-directly-my-fault Spider-Man, how about something new on film?
