When did pro wrestling become a property above third party mockery?
Plus from character standpoints, modern wrestling is so dull. It's probably a hell of a lot more fun to riff on the classic stuff.

The Simpsons has been crap since 2004-2006, That was me being lenient on the time frame. Many will probably say earlier. Give me some examples. I want to like the new Simpsons, as I like the old ones, but I just can't anymore. [/quote] See, that's funny, but not Simpsons funny. The Simpsons became big with slightly edgy, but in the end, more wholesome fun and satire. Homer finishing a bucket list after thinking some sushi is going to kill him, the story of Lisa's first word, Homer having a crush on the girl at work just like him but fighting the urge to betray Marge, Bart feeling remorse after trying to steal a video game and ruining Marge's Christmas photo, etc. Not Homer shooting up donuts, Marge being a bitch and making out with several female characters, Lisa inventing Facebook, or Bart dating every god damn female guest voice.

How do you know they didn't just see a story about WWE on the news or something, search up pro-wrestling on Wikipedia or something, saw Gorgeous George as one of the first names mentioned, the explanation of heels and faces, then just stopped right there and chucked out the episode? (It's a stretch) I have one question and one observation: - When's the last time there was a story about the WWE on the news? - Having just typed "Pro Wrestling" into Wikipedia, I can safely say the first two names mentioned are Vince McMahon and Christopher Daniels. So, yeah. That's a stretch that would make even Reed Richards slack-jawed.

Plus, I was exaggerating on the Wikipedia thing, but I just don't buy it as a wrestling fan poking fun at wrestling. After watching it on two occasions, it feels like someone who knows little about wrestling made a joke about wrestling. The Simpsons is really bad now-a-days to me(but to others as well), so that probably factors into it.

You described why the Simpsons isn't as good as it used to be very, very well. Also, good lord, they really did that? That's pretty much everything wrong with current-day Simpsons in one quick gif.

Matt Selman wrote it. Go to Twitter and tell him.
I thought it was ok. The reason it's old-timey wrestling is because it's Burns and Grandpa. They're old, you see.

There's always the occasional "kid gets hurt doing WWE moves". When's the last time this happened? I'm genuinely curious. It's been my experience that those who know little about wrestling aren't very likely to pull out a Gorgeous George reference. Probably. More than likely.

I thought it was a good episode. Simpsons the past 4 years went from gags and meh back to nice storytelling with good bits leading to a happy conclusion.
Don't know what was so bad. Grandpa wanted Bart to be a good apple instead of becoming an unloved jerk like Monty.
Mr. Burns was hilarious
A lot of the "add simpsons" from 03-09 were just kind of like eh.
The classics were great because the writing was coming from guys trying to create classic tv. Where as the last decade was just about shitting out new content. Simpsons is better now then it was 7 years ago because of a change in writers.
But eh "my era was better" is so cliche for simpsons nowadays.
Of course season 1-12 is all aces for me because those are just golden, no real big duds.
But you know whatever. I am a lifelong simpsons guy and wrestling guy. So i liked it.
You must hate the new looney tunes where they became a more mature kind of sitcomy stuff as opposed to just gags from the old looney tunes/bus bunny road runner hour. This new looney tunes is a lot like duck dodgers which also changed a lot of the original duck dodgers stuff....

I recall a thread condemning this episode prior to my viewing it and thought it was a ridiculous overreaction.
I have since watched the episode, which confirmed the negative thread was a ridiculous overreaction.
The episode was great, and any wrestling fan who thinks it's an insult really needs to stop being so precious and lighten up.

Wake up call OP, MOST wrestling fans are morons.
Not so much the people online but your average wrestling fan isn't really that intelligent. Everyone has a "stupid wrestling fan" story about a grown adult.

OP, have you seen the wrestling episode of South Park? If you were angry about Burns calling wrestling fans idiots, that SP episode is really going to piss you off.

So there was a wrestling-based Simpsons episode sometime in 2013. First off, The Simpsons has been crap since 2004-2006, and I'm being very lenient when I use that time frame, but that's worthy of it's own thread. Anyways, Homer buys a storage unit(parody of Storage Wars) and finds a bunch of wigs and boas, finding out they were Grandpa's. They think he's gay, so they try to embrace it(includes dumb blind date joke with Smithers), and it's revealed that he was actually a pro-wrestler back in the day, which happened to be a Gorgeous George parody. Anyways, Grandpa explains how he got heat as a heel(they used the term) by cheating against babyfaces(also used it). Mr. Burns, and old school fan convinces Grandpa to wrestle again as a heel to entertain him. The episode is absolute shit because it's on the fence on whether pro-wrestling is fake or real, and there is no mention of modern wrestling at all. They treat it like it's still the 40s and 50s. Burns makes an awful joke by looking at the viewer and basically saying that wrestling fans are complete morons. That really f***ing pissed me off. Bart joins Grandpa as a heel and apparently that makes him a bad kid(the pranks he's done for years mean nothing I guess). So Grandpa turns face(yes, I just said that) and Burns fights him in the end, with Bart making the face turn to save Grandpa. Really awful episode(as they usually are now), and an insult to Simpsons and wrestling fans everywhere. It ends with "Honest Abe" and "Liberty Boy", Grandpa and Bart, celebrating as it cuts to a crayon picture of them in Bart's room. Great, now he's a f***ing asshole who learns from stupid shit. Anyways, f*** this shit. It sucked. What do you guys think? Wrestling in pop-culture good or bad?

I guess maybe this episode just didn't click with me. And you think the Simpsons went back to nice storytelling with good bits? I have a post above where I compare old Simpsons to new Simpsons(the one in response to Homer shooting up donuts)

OP, have you seen the wrestling episode of South Park? If you were angry about Burns calling wrestling fans idiots, that SP episode is really going to piss you off. I've seen a lot of the South Park wrestling gags(kid wrestlers are all pre-madonnas, Edge "took his job", etc.) and I thought those were funny and well executed. I'm not upset he insulted wrestling, I'm sure us fans hear that schtick all the time. I'm upset at how poor, blunt, and shameless the execution was. There's always the occasional "kid gets hurt doing WWE moves". When's the last time this happened? I'm genuinely curious. www.cnn.com/2013/06/19/justice/louisiana-wrestling-deathThe whole CM Punk hitting a fan also could've been inspiration. You never know. Lawler's heart attack, maybe even seeing Cena for some promotional thing or something. It just doesn't feel like something a wrestling fan would come up with. Either way, I still wholeheartedly believe the Simpsons is awful now and this episode was a very bad parody.

I'm not upset that they made fun of wrestling. I just feel it was an awful job. That's how I take it as an insult. Other shows have done funny parodies of wrestling that I've found funny. This episode just didn't seem good to me at all. If you like the new Simpsons, that's cool. I personally don't, and neither to a lot of other fans.

Just watched the episode.
Saw nothing offensive about the joke. No more offensive than any other Simpsons joke.

At least it's better than the last time The Simpsons and Wrestling intersected. Now THAT was an insult to people's intelligence.

The Simpsons is still great, it's always been a reflection of society and as society has changed so has the Simpsons. It might not be the same but it's not bad and is still as clever and funny as ever, it's just that you don't like what it's reflecting anymore. As far as the wrestling episode goes it was blunt but it's bluntness was supposed to be it's comedy not to mention Burn's hypocrisy and the fact that he himself was being the quintessential crowd insulting heel.
Just because you don't think that's what they were going for doesn't mean that's not what they were going for, not to mention a lot the guys at the Simpsons ARE wrestling fans whether you believe it or not. I highly doubt they did the episode just because they saw a news article and Wikipedia'd it, even if you did admit you were stretching.
