He's a terrible wrestler, has a poor work ethic, and regularly eats Make-a-Wish Children. His booking is always fantastic though, and I never grow tired of his character.

He's always been a decent wrestler, the problem is his character and the WWE itself limiting what he does in the ring. I doubt he decided he should be a generic brawler that overcomes the odds, that seems more a management decision as that's been a successful formula for them in the past.

Never had a problem with Cena or his abilities, my problem has always been with the way he was booked.
He still can't throw a decent punch though.

Kinda reminds me of Hulk Hogan in his prime years. Hogan was a very good worker as shown in Japan but he was pretty much limited to doing the same moves and mannerisms ad nauseum. For some reason once a guy becomes the big star, the big money maker, the company seems to restrict what they do. Austin was a pretty solid wrestler but in his prime years, became a flat out brawler.

When was Cena ever a bad wrestler? Dude has the best matches. It just depends on the person hes feuding with.
Cena carries most people and when he strikes gold with feuds like with Daniel Bryan and CM Punk, they really allow him to cut loose and try a whole new set of moves. You watch SummerSlam last night and Cena does all these crazy moves like a sitdown power bomb. He faces Punk and he pulls out the Hurricanrana. The dude is awesome.
When Cena gets someone like Ryback who is a one trick pony, there isnt much he can do and both guys look awful. Cena cant turn chicken shit into chicken salad all the time. Ryback just sucks. Sucks on the mic, one dimensional in the ring.

Depends on what you call a "good wrestler". There are so many variables (technical ability, big time feel, character, selling, work ethic, bringing the best out of any opponent, promos, pacing, psychology, and so on) that one can take into account (or not) when defining what makes a "good wrestler" that you could argue one side or the other, depending on your definition of it... and both sides could potentially be as justified as it gets.

Look. John Cena is a really good wrestler. He ALWAYS comes through with a good-to-beyond-great match when needed. For all the talk of his "five moves" he is a remarkably versatile performer. Near or at HBK's level on PPV. Most criticism is focused on his character as written or the story lines he is bound to. I love John Cena. I love his PPV matches. I love his passion for the business. I love his work with really important charities. And I love that he is the face of WWE, a company that I've been a fan of for most of my life. It's just for about 20 minutes every Monday night that I'm not a fan.

I guess the plan was to disguise Ryback's limitations, but had they been booked as just straight up one-on-one bouts, Cena might have had an easier time dictating the match pace and carrying him.

He's never really been a _bad_ wrestler. Booking aside, he's capable of good matches in the WWE Main Event style. He just has an awkward moveset with some moves that just aren't ever going to look good (specifically that flying shoulder tackle of his, his weird flying turkey legs dropkick). Cena's "flying turkey legs dropkick" is the best thing about him.

Some people will never admit when they are wrong or refuse to give him props. Saying Cena can't wrestle is second nature to them.

Austin was f***ed over because of his neck. That severely impacted his in-ring stuff.

I think we can all agree that this style of thread needs to stop popping up every single time Cena has a PPV match.

He's still often sloppy and clumsy, but he's as good as he needs to be.
