Below is the rumored card for next month's WWE Night of Champions PPV event. Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton for the WWE Title was confirmed last night on SmackDown:
* Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton for the WWE Title. This bout was confirmed on last night's edition of Smackdown.
* Rob Van Dam with Ricardo Rodriguez vs. Alberto Del Rio for the World Heavyweight Title
* Big Show and Mark Henry vs. Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns for the Tag Team Titles
* CM Punk vs. Curtis Axel for the Intercontinental Title
* Dolph Ziggler vs. Dean Ambrose for the United States Title
* One of the Total Divas vs. AJ Lee for the Divas Title
* The Usos vs. Erick Rowan and Luke Harper
Ughhh.. With Lesnar gone what is the point of Punk feuding with Heyman now? Heyman has no one else in his stable except for Axel who NO ONE cares about? THey are wasting Punk for nothing.

WWE isn't very well booked and they have a shallow talent pool in the main event right now.

I think they should've had RVD align with Heyman and had the two feud. The matches would've been pretty damn awesome.

Punk said he'd set fire to everyone associated with Heyman before he destroyed Heyman himself. Logical progression of the story.

Punk said he'd set fire to everyone associated with Heyman before he destroyed Heyman himself. Logical progression of the story. Wouldn't logical progression have been to start with the smallest threat and work up to the biggest threat? It seems CM Punk will be spinning his wheels while Daniel Bryan does his best at being miscast in the role of Diet Punk.

Punk said he'd set fire to everyone associated with Heyman before he destroyed Heyman himself. Logical progression of the story. Heyman isn't associated with very many guys is he? Axel and Lesnar (and hes gone for months now) Sadly no, I'm kinda sad that Shield wasn't kept around by Heyman, would have been a strong force on his side and it would have enabled the Punk and Bryan storylines to crossover, forcing them to team-up to take out a foe they can't beat alone. A new Megapowers for a certain slice of the audience almost. Punk said he'd set fire to everyone associated with Heyman before he destroyed Heyman himself. Logical progression of the story. Too bad that Brock has beaten the hell out of him for the most part. Yeah.... I get that it was SummerSlam but they've kinda blown their load right off the bat. You build up to Brock by going through Axel, the reverse just feels like such a step down and the WWE have to know it. There's no way that match ends without shenanigans. At this point is it even fair to say that Axel is a threat to Punk? Every time Punk and Lesnar got into it Axel tried to interject only to be effortlessly cast aside. In the perfect scenario he would have gone through Axel first and Axel would have been a somewhat credible threat but they blew their load early to get a big match on the SummerSlam card that honestly didn't really need it.

Having viewed this through the eyes of a non-fan, it certainly appears that Bryan is in over his head as the rebel against the Corporate machine, while Punk would have been perfect for that role. Bryan is Owen and HHH is Vince circa 1997. Owen wouldn't have lasted 2 months in a feud with Vince comparative to how Austin did because that wasn't Owen's character. Bad timing for Punk, I guess. He peaked two years too early.

I don't necessarily think Bryan is being cast as the "rebel" so much as he is the "guy going to prove he belongs by going through everyone HHH puts up against him".
Bryan isn't the type who wants to watch the world burn, and I hope they don't try to book him that way. He doesn't have the ego to pull it off.
As far as "Punk should be the one", Eh. His "this company sucks, everyone sucks but me" shtick would bury the rest of the roster too much, even more than they already are.

No-one cares about Axel because no-one has been given much reason to care about Axel.
I think the two could have a really good match so I'll look forward to it.

To create a scenario where a natural underdog babyface goes against impossible odds and unfair treatment to reclaim what he was cheated out of? Unless you meant in terms of the performer rather then the storyline in which case I couldn't disagree more.

because Brock Lesnar only has a limited schedule and they need someone to be Punk's punching bag in the meantime.

Presumably the Punk/Axel match will end with Punk getting beaten up by some new, slightly more credible Heyman guy (Ryback? Someone debuting from NXT?) who he can feud with for the next couple PPVs.

I think WWE still sees something in Axel, so this feud could end up as a last-ditch effort at getting him over.
And there really aren't many other options for Punk to feud with right now, especially since it's more about Punk vs. Heyman than anything else.
I could see Heyman bringing in a new guy (possibly someone from NXT) at Night of Champions to feud with Punk, after he's done with Axel.

I don't mind that if the progression of the story means that Punk will have another chance at Brock and will be more prepared to focus on Lesnar and deal with Heyman afterwards.

I don't know about you but it makes good sense to me. Punk starts with Lesnar because that's the prime kill, but he can't beat him because he is too blinded by the hate for Paul Heyman. Since he loses, he is forced to start the journey from scratch... going against Curtis Axel, and eventually working up to a rematch with Lesnar to beat him by keeping his anger against Paul in check. Seems like a better story to me than us getting the traditional Hollywood narrative of the hero's unstoppable journey... this one reads more like a comic book arc than anything else.
I hate how we can be so quick to judge a match as a "waste of time"... it's a part of a larger story, and people need to learn to be patient. We'll see how it plays out though...
