It dawned on me watching Impact last night with Bully Ray, Mr. Anderson, Wes Brisco, Carrot Bischoff, Knux, and Tito Ortiz in the ring that this was it. This was Aces & Eights. All of the weeks and months of buildup and voice masking promos and beer bottles and whores and bad endings to Impact and Pay Per Views and a vast number of masked guys who just stopped appearing over time and this was it. They debuted in June 2012 and got ample TV time, and it wasn't until October we got a reveal: Devon. Wow! In November we got DOC. In January, Anderson joined, we got the reveal of Knux, and whatever the hell this was.
At the end of January we got the anticlimactic reveals of Wes and Carrot. In March, we got D'Lo Brown.
Finally at LockDown we got Bully Ray as the President, only about 10 months after this shitshow started. D'Lo was kicked out in May. Emo AJ turned them down. Doc left with a wimper in July. Devon left last week. Tito Ortiz is the Dennis Rodman of the group. Taz doesn't do anything. Brooke is about as relevant to the group as Traci Brooks was in the Main Event Mafia. All of that TV time devoted to them and this was it.
And all because somebody in Orlando got a little too wrapped up in Sons of Anarchy.

Can anyone even explain what Taz has to do with anything Ace's and 8's related?

He mostly just puts them over on commentary. Should this surprise anyone that has watched TNA though? The entire company has always been about big picture factions and storylines that NEVER, and I mean NEVER pay off. Or if there actually is a payoff it's so far past the point when anything mattered that no one cares. The Immortal storyline could have had a payoff if they had simply ended it after Hogan turned face at BFG 2011, but no. They had to draw it out another 6 months until Lockdown when Bischoff finally lost and went away, and even then I think some guys called themselves Immortal until it ran out of gas.
Same thing with the Main Event Mafia. How did it even end? I don't remember. Some guys just left like Booker and Nash, Steiner fell out of grace, and Sting just kinda did his thing and turned face.
I'm amazed that promotions can't book a faction angle. It's simple: Build them up a while, then they eventually lose a match where they have to break up forever and go away. How hard is that?

Aces & 8's is a textbook example of "writing" rather than "booking" a wrestling show. A booker would work out loosely what they want to achieve (what match they are ultimately aiming for) and then write the show as a buildup to that.
Aces however is the opposite - the story/characters/gimmicks came first, with no idea what the final ending would be. TNA's greatest weakness from a creative standpoint is this - they rarely plan from the end and work backwards, they come up with a beginning and work onwards, hoping that things will eventually slot into place.

The problem with TNA love of heel factions is the faces never get that sweet victory in the end. S.E.X. just faded away. MEM ended because Kurt said he respect Matt Morgan and that was that. The Front Line looked like chumps because even with the numbers advantage, they needed help from Team 3D and Rhino. None of the younger guys got a rub that elevated them. Immortal lasted forever with them surviving like a cockroach. Even after a newly babyface Fortune beating them in matches that should been the end of the group. It's only after Hulk turned face and Eric getting the on camera boot before it finally died.

You see guys, these factions that go nowhere are actually a great idea. They remind people of the nwo and they tune to see it for the nostalgia. And the reason they fizzle away like they do is because...umm....they...
.....so SOR's not available today?

I'm pretty sure the payoff was the Bully Ray reveal and title win. Now it's the deconstruction bit.

Let's not forget that instead of being a stable, Aces & 8s is nothing more than a punch of chumps and flunkies for Bully Ray. Aside from Devon winning a Television title he never defended, and Mr. Anderson being in the BFG Series, what else have any of the others none. Taz sucking it up commentary, Wes acting like he belongs on the little school bus. Heck, even the whores left them.
If what's left of Aces & 8s hates how Bully is acting, then why don't they just leave him. Or is that asking to much.

Well, if there's one thing I can say that's positive about this, it's that their numbers are actually a good reflection of how much power they are wielding.
There were 9 of them when they officially took over TNA at Lockdown, and that's when they were at their apex. Since then, they've slowly become more divided and Bully has become progressively more distant from the rest of the group, with Bully, Brooke, and Tito becoming the Wolfpac to the Aces B-Team this week. D'Lo lost one match and found himself on the outside looking in, and DOC felt betrayed when the group favored Anderson in the VP poll. It's as if their strength has actually been tied to and reflected by how many members they have, to the point where a consensus vote from the core group is actually amounting to four people.
I wish I could say that TNA intended for it to be this way, but it's a pretty cool observation none the less.

I wouldn't mind that if Bully used their status as his flunkies to basically browbeat them into submission. Like, pointing out that he's the World champ, but they're none of them were amounting to anything before Bully came along and got them to join his club, so if they leave they'll go right back into obscurity.

Once this collapses under it's mediocre weight, I hope the silver linning is that EGO/Aries/AJ fills the big void left. Boom period led by Daniels.

We need a TNA version of that "Let's just wait and see how this goes, guys" pic...though you may need several pics just to squeeze them all in.

I was pretty damn depressed looking in the ring on Thursday and seeing a group that was comprised of Bully Ray, Mr. Anderson, Knux, Garett Bischoff, Wes Briscoe, Tito Ortiz, and Brooke Tessmacher. When they were masked we all had big hopes for who could be in the group, and this is who we're left with.
And then I remember Immortal, and I think... it's not so bad, is it?
