Disclaimer: This thread is not about the tragedy, more about the companies reaction to it, and why they chose to do Raw the way they did. Instead of the format used for tribute shows in the past. This is a question and query more than anything for me, and it is not a way for us to discuss the tragedy outside of this episode of Raw and the reason why it was like this. What has been said about the tragedy over the years has been said, and I think every view point and perceptive has been used and shared. Sorry I just felt this was needed both for the mods and just to make it clear to everyone what this thread was about.
I am just wondering (when comparing the tribute show to Eddie's and Owen's) why they went with having no live audience? Instead of the ten bell salute, roster members on the stage,etc. I am sure that it was figured out what actually happened half way through the Raw, so they must have made the decision before the show aired to uniquely have no audience before they knew the full story? I am just wondering why? When at that point all they knew is that the family had died?
Why didn't they have a normal tribute for him, like Owen and Eddie got? Especially without having an actual audience is the main thing that confuses me.

well, for one thing this also involved the death of his family, which Owen and Eddie's death didn't.

Maybe the timing had something to do with it. The WWE only learned of the discovery of the bodies at about 4:15 PM Monday. Maybe they were hedging their bets a bit? The possibility of a Benoit murder/suicide might have crossed their minds (certainly it seemed to cross Regal's mind, from the tone of his recorded tribute). Also, most of the talent wouldn't have learned of the news until they arrived at the arena that night, so maybe they figured it would be tough to put them through a show with so much uncertainty still out there.

It's probably that they heard so late what happen and the wrestlers didn't have time to digest and understand what was going on, that Vince felt no point of bringing a crowd to see some video packages.

Yeah, the more I think it the more they may have thought (at least a little) that HE was the one responsible for it. .....I mean, what if the crowd had been there when news started to break that BENOIT was the one who killed them? Forget the article about awkward celebrity appearances, THIS would've been beyond awkward. And I'll wager that the WWE just figured sending the crowd home was for the best. Also, rather sure Regal's comments that night came after people backstage were finding out the truth. His comments were impersonal and cold compared to those who preceded him; HHH spoke after him and he was even more frigid. |

The show would have had to be completely rewritten because the planned show was a fake memorial for the presumed dead Vince McMahon which would have been completely inappropriate.

They should have just took a marker pen to the script (or if they had it as a word document used find and replace) and crossed out every mention of Vince Mcmahon and replaced it with "Chris Benoit" and ran the exact same show they had originally planned with no differences other than Vince's name being replaced with Benoit. They already had a memorial show written, seemed like a waste really to change it. |

It would have been the same as the Owen and Eddie Raw's though, those scripts I'm sure got thrown out and they just decides to have the show dedicated to their memories. With Benoit though, it's not like he died in his hotel while traveling with them like Eddie. Or died doing a stunt on PPV like Owen. If it was just Benoit passing away in a sad accident or heart failure or something, I'm sure they'd have done a huge show with the fans and tributes the whole night. But it wasn't just him, it was him, his wife, and his son, which I'm sure sent off some red flags right away within the inner circle of the WWE. |

Probably because it involved his wife and son, in addition to him. Also, the fact that it was a triple murder (they thought at the time), of a family is on another level. The fact that the wrestlers didn't haver any time to process it, and the whole situation, the murder, the Vince McMahon blown up plot, the best thing to do was just cancel RAw and do what they did.
If they had known it was a murder-suicide, I think they would have, with the cooperation of USA, just canceled Raw entirely, with a video disclaimer by Vince McMahon about what happened.

The decision was made at the last minute. The entire announce team was in wardrobe for Vince's "funeral".
With the first reports coming out as the show aired, that he was the murderer, it would have been even more awkward with a crowed. Some would have found out during the show

I think it was pretty darn evident to them that it was more than just a premature death. The needing to fly home, the text messages among other things. They probably didn't know the extent of what happened, but they were going to be more touch and go as opposed to Eddie, who they had a few days to focus on, as well as Owen, who's situation was much more apparent to them. If they had known it was a murder-suicide, I think they would have, with the cooperation of USA, just canceled Raw entirely, with a video disclaimer by Vince McMahon about what happened. I guess the silver lining there is we'd never have to hear Cole proclaim "longest running weekly episodic" ever again. |

With Eddie and Owen, the circumstances of their deaths were clear when the shows went out, one was heart failure and the other an accidental death. With Benoit, there was an ongoing police investigation and the details were still very sketchy. The details began emerging throughout the evening, and it became very uncomfortable and upsetting.
